The winner is Calgary, hands down.

I might have had to move here in order to have a future, and to actually get a girlfriend and dare have a family, but Calgary in some respects, is not better than Winnipeg. Prime example: taking 4 hours on transit to get to/from SAIT, while the absolute worst Winnipeg gas for U of M is MAYBE two hours MAX. Red River College? Maximum 2 as well. I also never remembered finding needles all over the place outside RRC before... so Calgary might have some clear and specific advantages over Winnipeg, but in some aspects, its actually alot worse.

Perhaps Calgary had jobs that were reflective of his skill set. If you had experience in the oil and gas industry or banking Calgary would be a good bet. If you had experience in bus manufacturing of aerospace, Winnipeg might be the better of the two. Or at least give you some options. Plus your chances of getting hitched are a little better if you establish a career or have a job.

This is technically Winnipeg Retail news but it's pretty exciting (to me at least)...

Livestock is going to be moving out of its Graham Ave location and into the Fortune Block by the end of the year. They haven't used that backame entrance since they took over the space from TUB a few years ago, so not having a streetfront presence didn't really make sense.

This is one of the most prominent men's clothing stores in the city (even if you're not into streetwear, it's a big deal) moving to Main Street. A good sign that there are businesses willing to take the "risk" here. AFAIK that makes 3/4 main floor units spoken for in Fortune Block.

Often times people that have trouble finding a relationship simply need a change of scenery, or just a method to get out there, and moving away will often help with that respect.

I have no issue with people moving around, to different cities, and finding success elsewhere.

My issue is when people choose to constantly complain about and disparage where they came from, with mostly dubious arguments.

It's good to see the Fortune building filling up.

The arguments are perfectly valid. Plus without my perspective here and there, much like when I used to lurk SSP (2013-2019) and see the chaos that erupted between eachother over subjects, problems and other facts - especially over the stupidest shit imaginable - it all just becomes a downhill gongshow.

With my newly-returned SSP two-cents, gotta admit - people are finally starting to talk about the critical issues, even if it pisses everybody off, at least we're all finally now having a conversation about whats wrong with Winnipeg, ideas to fix it, etc etc.

Plus if you scroll up to the top of the page, you'll find actual criticism of Calgary versus Winnipeg. I might like my new mountain paradise, but in some aspects, Calgary is like a suburbanized version of hell. It makes Winnipeg suburbs (pre-Linden Woods) look like high-density Manhattan, in comparison. Plus there was some crazy stuff thats happened in Winnipeg, but I never recall anyone ever going through the Siemens-Duwag meat grinder, like someone did yesterday with the CTrain... or how about addicts camping out with numbers in the dozens, right in front of Polo Park, like at Cadillac Fairviews prized posession (Chinook)? Never seen any more than maybe 3-4 junkies EVER at Polo Park, at any one single time. The house prices at $600k? $3.40 busfare for shit transit service outside of the LRT and Route 3?

Winnipeg Transit might be a joke, but at least they understand the concept of going from A to B. Polo might not be glitzy, but least Genghis Khan isn't waiting to greet people outside the doors, or having tents parked along Portage, needles and siht everywhere (if you visit Calgary soon, look at the Chinook underpass near Glenmore, you'll be shocked at how bad and open-air it is out here). No LRT, but even though operators have died in WT, suicides and people jumping in front of buses are unheard of in Winnipeg, nvm a regular occurrence... Winnipeg development sacrificing development for history, versus Calgary bulldozing all and replacing it with skyscrapers that are now empty and void of offices...

Winnipeg has some issues, yes, but honestly Winnipeg has dodged quite a few bullets. So as long as Pallister & the City of Winnipeg govt don't shit the bed all over again, in regards to developing what needs to be developed, funding what needs to be funded, NOT pissing off WPS, NOT continuing the welfare/poverty circle eternally, and NOT driving people out of Winnipeg to outside the Perimetre (such as the RM of Ritchot gouging businesses out of the city, or East St Paul getting any more massive) if not out to other provinces... then Winnipeg's golden. But damn, if we don't have these conversations and bring up the critiques, who will...?

BTW, whatever happened to Cyro? Just out of curiosity, remembered him taking over from 1ajs for modding MB/SK for a bit, but haven't seen him post in ages. No complaints though, just have no idea what happened to him.

I went and looked at offices in there. The upper floors of the building are gorgeous, but it has a very Law & Order / 60s film noir private investigator – was definitely not a fit for us as a creative agency. Very formal feel.

VOAK is a local clothing brand that used to be called Oak + Oar and was in the Johnston Terminal. They've been open since August in FB, it seems odd to have a clothing store on the third floor here, but I wish them the best.

Here's Times Change(d)'s sign – it's decent, but really wish they went with the metal look from the renders. Looks a little cheap in white. Also really sucks they didn't put the chicken up.

Livestock is a pretty good add for the Fortune Block, they are a solid retail draw judging by the people who line up outside their store on a weekly basis.

Yeah, it's the only place in the city that gets all the big Nike and Adidas drops, it's a very good place for them to be. A good look for the city too – they're a highly regarded brand across the country.

Re : Fortune Bldg
Once the Winnipeg Hotel gets a remodel, Some period lighting and streetscaping would also be in welcome and make this pop..which might spur more activity on South Main street. Here is an opportunity for the city and nearby businesses to make this a little different are with a fun nostalgic and eclectic vibe.

Yeah, the streetscaping around this stretch of south Main is in dire need of improvement, apart from newer model bus shelters it appears virtually unchanged since at least the 80s.

Sorry if I missed it but does anyone know what is being built on the surface lot at the corner of Sara Ave and Furby St? Seems to be some work happening there.
