You guys are hilarious. The legislature is going to sit this week, he's probably giving his own version of a "throne speech".

Weaver loves to hear himself talk, that's no secret.

I have never been a big NDP fan, but they haven't s*it the bed too bad this time. I agree their economic focus is still not strong, but the economy had been doing OK so they inherited something decent and haven't done much to destroy it (a global recession seems likely soon so this isn't their doing). But they are still not focused enough on development, transporation or growth the way the Campbell Liberals were. That was a good time for big projects.

But ya the Liberal problem is their leader is awful. I wanted Jody Wilson Raybould to take over, I feel like she could bring them back up and be popular all around

Weaver made the BC Green Party significant I wish we could trade him for Wilkinson and hope his health is good.

Looks like that is it:

B.C. Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver is expected to announce his intent to resign as head of the party on Monday, just weeks after a health scare landed him in a hospital emergency room.

Mr. Weaver, who currently leads a caucus that holds the balance of power in British Columbia’s minority government, will not be resigning his seat in Oak Bay-Gordon Head, so his decision will not upset the fragile balance in the legislature.

The BC NDP holds 41 seats, the Greens three and the Opposition Liberals 42. Speaker Darryl Plecas sits as an independent.

The Greens called a news conference for Monday morning, at the start of the fall session of the legislature, promising a “significant announcement” by Mr. Weaver.

An official close to Mr. Weaver, who is not being identified by The Globe and Mail because they were not authorized to speak about this issue, said the announcement would focus on the next stage for the party...

Confirmation on that; the announcement went live just a few minutes go. He's stepping down, and won't run again in the next election.

Might as well cut to the chase: who takes over as MLA and/or party leader?

He's staying on until the next election. Stepping down as leader now, I assume they have a procedure for picking new one. My bet's on Sonja.

*By election. When somebody drops out unexpectedly (e.g. Meggs joining Horgan's cabinet and the VSB getting fired), there's a snap vote to fill their spot/s.

I knew that.

It just put an interesting spin on an election that could swing both ways

Did you read the same press release I did? There will be no change until the next election.

If anything a snap election would allow them to build on their lead given there has been no serious gaffes or scandals and the BCLiberals picked a lame duck to lead them to the next election.

The one I just read says: "The decision appears to have little immediate consequence for the Green-NDP power-sharing deal. Weaver said he has no intention of doing anything to force a new election."

Also: "He said that by giving notice now, on the first day of the fall session of the legislature, the Greens will have time to set a leadership race for spring 2020 and the new leader will have more than a year to settle into the role before the next election."

"Baby I adjourn this way," I get it. Just making sure we address the message and the potential for a bad joke.

Oh look, Speaker Plecas was right. No wonder Sargeant At Arms Lenz quit in advance of this independent report by former Metro Vancouver Transit Police Chief Doug Lepard, apparently he misled Justice McLachlin when she was doing her report:

Retires and gets full pension.

Let's see misher defend this one. As I recall he was Lenz' greatest defender.

Someone just pulled a Butts for Horgan.

Quote:
Horgan chief of staff Meggs shredded Speaker’s 2018 report on corrupt Legislature officials

Meggs was elected three times on the Vision Vancouver ticket led by Gregor Robertson. Despite a promise to run a transparent city hall, Vision made it one of Canada’s most-secretive. In 2016, B.C. Information and Privacy Commissioner Elizabeth Denham slammed City of Vancouver for routinely breaking the freedom of information laws. In 2018, theBreaker.news revealed how Robertson used a secret Gmail account to hide email from FOI requesters.

Meggs’s admission that he destroyed a copy of the report puts him at least at odds with the spirit of B.C.’s freedom of information laws — laws that the NDP promised during the 2017 election to reform, after slamming the BC Liberals for mass-deleting email.

In an April 27, 2017 letter from the NDP campaign to the B.C. Freedom of Information and Privacy Association, the party boasted of tabling a private members’ bill for a strict duty to document law.

“Our proposed legislation creates the duty to investigate instances of unauthorized destruction of government information and removes legal immunity from officials who fail to disclose documents, making contraventions of the Act an offence subject to fines of up to $50,000,” said the letter.

Instead of tabling such a law, the NDP government made minor additions to the BC Liberal-enacted Information Management Act that it had criticized as insufficient.
