A theory I had is that the gas pumps and/or tanks reached the end of their serviceable life and the station was probably breaking even on costs, so investing a bunch of money to replace the equipment didn't make financial sense.

Regina's next brownfield I guess?

I find it really annoying and a waste of money that the city built a stage at the Plaza, but put up a temporary stage almost right beside it every week.

I've heard the stage was not build big enough. The location was fine, but in practical terms, it's too small to accommodate much.

Today's front page story in the LP is largely about the Plaza. They go pretty soft on the City.

One thing I don't get is that everyday around 5:30 they have a portable soup kitchen set up to give hot soup or chili or something to transient youth. I don't want to sound like a snob, but why there? If they want to encourage people to stay downtown in the evening, they need to clean the area up.

Somebody got a public grant to do this, I wonder from whom?

One may suggest these kids are harmless, but clearly not all of them are. Further, tourists, senior citizens and others are put off by this.

So let me get this straight, the plaza, a public space is ok for fancy food trucks where seniors, tourists and the working class can use and enjoy, but set up a portable soup kitchen that serves food to less fortunate youths of society and it's viewed as a bad thing and should be moved elsewhere? All I can say is wow, since when are public spaces limited to the Bourgeois? I am not sure snobbish is the right way to describe your view..

However unfortunate it may be, if you don't think there is truth to what he is stating...that people would be put off by it...then you are being naive IMO.

Fantastic reply. Public areas of the city are for everyone to enjoy. Pushing fantastic ventures like this soup kitchen to a less desirable area will further seclude the less fortunate. We are one city, one community, and no one is less deserving of the use of our public spaces than the next person.

For shaaaaame, other guy.

Both of them are right. It's not fair to force the less fortunate to the less desirable areas for service, but it's also realistic that allowing them to use the more desirable areas will make them less desirable to others.

I am not saying these youth don't have a right to hang out in public spaces, but why are they being encouraged to do so by being offered free services at that specific location. A few posters here are being a bit disingenuous IMO. Would you want this set up in front of your business, home or school? I have to walk to my parking spot past there every evening, and I can tell you that it can be uncomfortable knowing the large number of crimes that have recently occurred around the Park. I am sure there are many others who will avoid this area, guaranteeing that it will continue be a wasteland in the evenings.

edit: I am sure most of these kids are OK kids, just disadvantaged or bored, but I have personal knowledge that there are convicted criminals among them.

Let me get this straight. Your friend got peed on by a homeless person?

Also, don't be so narrow minded.

You are a hot mess, my friend.

I am not condoning or promoting violence and destruction, obviously.
Maybe these kids would be less likely to cause destruction and chaos in our downtown if we made it a more inviting and welcoming place (vs. sneering and telling them they belong in a different neighbourhood.) I don't know.

Anyway, let's move the farmer's market off the plaza as well, as its main demographic are the lower middle class... those hooligans.

I work for Regina Downtown and deal with SCOPE, the organization that runs the soup table in the park. The reason they set up there is to lure those kids away from businesses such as beer bros etc. However, this also makes the park and plaza unsafe. Say what you want but dealing with those kids (and adults) on a daily basis has been frustrating at times. Crimes such as graffiti, property damage, and harassment occur on a daily basis because of them. Like it or not there presence makes downtown feel unsafe. I would agree that maybe the soup should be set up elsewhere or else what business would want to locate close to this constant problem? We really need some sort of loitering law downtown. People are sitting outside havik and Bryan's daily, pushing away customers and adding to a bad/dangerous image of downtown. We need to be more proactive, yet it seems like most people just accept their presence and avoid downtown all together because of it, which essentially lets them win. Yes public spaces are for everybody, but not for contstant panhandling, criminals, and drug users.

Does anyone know when the City plans on fixing the bridge on Victoria Avenue over Pilot Butte creek?

Looks like it was budgeted for this year, and with all the troubles last year I thought they would have started on it by now seeing as its almost August....
