I was just thinking that. Maybe this will actually look GOOD when it's done instead of just being a casual improvement of something I didn't like much.

Note the collar with supports around the column - would that be for the blade sign? or entrance canopy-related?

You can see rebar where they'll form and pour new concrete for the protruding part.

Note the space that used to house the blowers at the Eaton's rotunda entrance
(recall in the 1970s and early 80s the rotunda entrance did not have doors during opening hours
- just jets of air from above and below that created a zonal climate separation between inside and outside).

The edge of the green panelling must be the edge of the stone cladding:

Cladding coming next week:

Notice sent around the office:

Quote:
DATE: July 29, 2013

ATTENTION: All Office Tenants – Pacific Centre

WHAT: 725 Granville Redevelopment Project – Construction Milestone: Exterior Work Update

WHEN: Beginning on Thursday, August 1, 2013

WHY: As part of the ongoing Redevelopment Project, Ledcor Construction will begin installing several elements of the new exterior façade for the building. This marks a milestone of the project, as the rebuilding process of the new building has begun.

IMPACT: This work will include the installation of the new curtain wall, glass, and exterior stone cladding to the exterior of the building. Work will begin on Granville Street on Tuesday, August 6, and will proceed along Robson Street, Howe Street, and finish along West Georgia Street in early 2014. The noise level will decrease significantly during this construction phase, but there will still be noise at times that may cause some interruption.

Thanks for the updates.

It will be interesting to see what the stone cladding will actually look like. The renders of this project have been inconsistent. Some renders depict a dated, yellowish beige-coloured stone, while others depict a more neutral, timeless light-grey-coloured stone.

Observe the two different shades of colours:

I really hope it is the latter.

I agree that the beige looks a bit dated - but the gray looks a bit drab.

Materials palette from the DPB meeting posted by Built Form on page 33 of the thread
- including Nordstrom honed finish exterior stone (not bright buff like the render, not gray either):

Too much James Cheng 'standard fare' has crept into this project and little of it will date well.

Whenever one regrets the architectural statement that could have ben built here but was not, or even when disappointed with final design tweaks; just remember what was there before ...

That beige stone is Nordstrom's thing. It would be like McDonald's not using red and yellow.

I refuse to complain about how this building turns out, given that it was one of my 'urbanist fantasies' that the Sears building be obliterated.

Haha it'll be a nice building with high end finishes. It's not going to put Vancouver on the map or anything but it'll fill a previously horrible hole in our architectural fabric.

WOW!! The roof is finally ( just about ) vegetation-free, would be nice if they just left a weed or two for those of us nostalgic for Sears deplorable building maintenance!

Too bad. The building looks better not doing Nordstrom's thing:
