I'd love to know where they found last-minute airfare & 5 nights in London for $2000. I'd be all over that...if it existed.

Orbitz has a bunch of deals in that price range. Don't know about the quality of the hotels but that's probably the kind of search they did.

I know this isn't about Austin, but didn't know where else to put it.

How amazing would this be??!?!?!! Apparently the billionaire guy who runs F1 says he will pay for the whole thing himself.

The main Formula 1 site has finally started selling tickets to the USGP in Austin (prior to today, it was just an "email me" link). Perhaps more interesting to this forum is the destination guide:

http://www.formula1.com/races/in_det...ion_guide.html

The guide is obviously meant for non-US travelers, which is interesting. Probably why they include the "Religion" statistics.

Looks like previously PSL-only tickets are now on sale.

They seriously need to update the picture of Austin on the bottom left of that link. That was like 5-6 years ago and the same view of the same area looks totally different today.

I agree, if they are going to properly market this city to the world they need to have up to date pictures of the city skyline. How hard is jt to go out and take a couple of pictures...

Hotel rooms scarce on F1 weekend

By Gary Dinges

Updated: 8:56 p.m. Sunday, July 1, 2012
Published: 7:27 p.m. Sunday, July 1, 2012

Austin's inaugural Formula One race is still five months away, but already more than 200 area hotels have no rooms available for Nov. 16-18, according to searches of leading online booking sites, including Expedia.com and Travelocity.com.

That number is up significantly from when the American-Statesman last surveyed Central Texas hotels and motels during spring.

Some hotels that appear fully occupied might have set aside blocks of rooms for the race, Goldman said, and those rooms may or may not be available to the general public. F1 organizers have said that about 4,500 rooms will be needed for people affiliated with the event, including drivers, crews and members of the media from all over the world.

"It's a massive increase," he said, "which isn't uncommon at all for big events like this."

As an example, Gray said the number of inquiries was 33 times the norm for the Super Bowl in Dallas.

The Austin area has 30,000 hotel rooms, San Antonio has 40,000, and Waco has 4,000, visitor bureau representatives in each city say.

YNN: Austin's F1 flight plans still up in the air:

http://austin.ynn.com/content/top_st...-up-in-the-air

ETA:

The Austin Chronicle has some additional info re: USGP international charter arrivals:

http://www.austinchronicle.com/news/...-level-orange/

Quote:
City Aviation Department staff is asking council today for $5.4 million to build a temporary customs facility to handle international charter flights arriving for Formula One. Staff say they've been told to expect about 200 international charter flight arrivals, including six to 10 jumbo jets and 10-30 other full-size commercial planes, even though Indianapolis, the last U.S. city to host F1, reported six to 11 total charter arrivals a year from 2001 to 2007, with "relatively few" direct international arrivals.

That's pretty cool. From the side view the rear wing and rear end doesn't appear to change much from the late 80's through today but the front end seems to keep evolving. I wonder how much more they can improve on the design before they hit neutral impact, by that I mean when there's nothing more they can do to improve the aerodynamics.

Here's something I've still seen no info on from anyone involved... What of the traffic plans for the Expo Center & Downtown State Parking areas. At the Expo center, they plan to put 18K cars in a lot with bad access that has never seen more than 8000 cars according to site personnel. Downtown, the State Employee lots will be in use by State employees on Friday. COTA plans to put 18000 cars where there are only 9400 State spaces. Where will the rest go? 2/3 of the traffic problem has been moved to these 2 areas, but no traffic plan is required? Seriously?

The city of Austin now has their Formula 1 page up, with most of the information about parking/things to do:

http://www.austintexas.gov/department/austin-grand-prix

Unfortunately, the title "Austin Grand Prix" probably won't mean a lot to out of town visitors -- they should indicate the US Grand Prix more prominently. Also it isn't linked to the URL that the city was giving out at events (http://www.austintexas.gov/usgrandprix)... not to mention doesn't show up on their own search engine yet -- perhaps not finished?
