I believe once we have a stronger alliance with the EU we'll see better developments in YEG. It is just a frustrating time right now. We can focus on good domestic and international returns this year, hopefully someing is in the works for 2008.

Continental is part of Skyteam (NWA, Delta, KLM, AF...)

More flip flops and fruity drinks for Edmonton sun worshippers

Edmonton, Alta. – Escaping winter’s icy grip has never been easier through Edmonton International Airport – North America’s fastest-growing major airport – with a record 26 flights per week to 10 non-stop sun destinations set for the 2007-2008 winter season.

“Edmontonians and northern Albertans love to take a winter break in warmer climes and they want to do it non-stop from Edmonton International,” says Peter McCart, Vice-President, Marketing, Edmonton Airports. “We’re proud to offer more non-stop sun destinations than ever before – no more layovers, no tight connections and no costly, long drives to Calgary.”

Non-stop Sun Destinations – Winter 2007-08

Mexico

Cabo San Lucas: One flight weekly, WestJet
Cancun: Eight flights weekly, Air Canada Vacations, Conquest, Signature, Sunwing, and Air Transat
Manzanillo: One flight weekly, Air Transat
Mazatlan: One flight weekly, WestJet
Puerto Vallarta: Five flights weekly, Signature, Sunwing, Air Transat

Caribbean

Montego Bay: One flight weekly, Air Canada Vacations
Puerto Plata: Two flights weekly, Signature, Air Transat
Punta Cana: Two flights weekly, Air Canada Vacations, Conquest
Santo Domingo: One flight weekly, Sunwing
Varadero: Four flights weekly, Conquest, Signature, and Air Transat

Along with the 10 non-stop sun destinations, direct flights to Liberia-Costa Rica and Cozumel are heating up the winter schedule, bringing the total number of sun destinations to 12. Additional flights to Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Varadero are also served directly.

The seasonal sun destination schedule begins in November and ends in April. Check www.flyedmonton.com for a complete schedule of sun destinations served from Edmonton International.

“Edmonton International is posting record 18 per cent passenger growth in 2007, adding to the business case to establish more routes,” says McCart. “With our current YEG-YES campaign, we are encouraging Edmontonians and northern Albertans to choose Edmonton International and help compel airlines to provide even more air service to our region and Northern and Western Canada.

“When you use Edmonton International, instead of another airport, you are saying ‘yes’ to more non-stop air services to the destinations you need and want to visit.”

Edmonton does have decent Southern connections - whether they are scheduled at the right times is debatable

Calgary seems to have a boatload of charters to Europe yet YEG has very few it seems. Maybe with LH starting up scheduled service some of those charters may shift to YEG. The demand has to be there I would think.

YYC/Calgary has marketed itself extremely well. Edmonton not so much.

It is a lot easier when you are only 75 miles from Banff plus Calgary has a recognizable identity (Oil country, rodeo, etc)

Edmonton has no identity that I can see.

Exactly, Edmonton hasn't taken the time to create an identity, or maybe I should say it has but it hasn't stuck to one campaign. Edmonton is run by an engineering mindset, not a business platform.

More like a farmer mindset - marketing isn't in their dictionary.

Irrate at Airline

I am just as frusyrated with the air service as every one else on the forum.
I was doing some digging around on the corporate EIA site and copied this from one of the latest release!!

"In the past12 months, nearly 50,000 people flew from EIA to Orlanda, FL, without non-slop service. That's approximately one full Boeing 737 each day of the week. Another 30,000 plus passengers flew into other Florida destinations.

East Asia traffic continues to grow. The region is now EIA's second largest overseas market after Western Europe with over 60,000 passengers in the past 12 months. This translates into five full Boeing 767s per week. What do all these numbers add up to? Room for growth! "

I dont understand if we have so many people headed to orlando from the edmonton market or Asia how airlines can justify not providing the service.

This makes me even more irate with AC

I am posting the link to the article

It is the link titled Summer under 2007

You are incorrectly assuming that if one airline entered the market they would then capture the entire market. They won't. Airlines don't work that way. An airline with a non-stop in international markets will still typically only carry half the traffic in the market. Edmonton-Florida is also low-yield and seasonal. People won't pay a premium for a non-stop.

I don't know I think it is a good mix. Most of the people I have run into in Edmonton upon return with the weirdest view of Edmonton are the Engineers. And yes I know that covers a broad spectrum, so I apologise in advance.

I agree with you 100%.

Here is a typical example of Edmonton's farmer mentality. The inner ring road. 75 Street just south of Wayne Gretzky Drive. This was supposed to be part of the inner ring road but when 50 residents didn't like the idea of trucks going down 75 Street, council didn't have the balls to approve the route. The residents reasons included that it would be unsafe for the kids playing in the area. Really? Are there that many kids playing dodgeball and ball hockey in and around 75 Street or on the service road adjacent to it? The only thing i ever notice on the 75 Street service road is photo radar. Small town thinking on the residents part and especially on city council. This is typical Edmonton "not in my backyard" attitude. What did people in the 75 Street area think, the 4 lane divided bridge would come to a dead end on the southside of the river.

Overall, Calgary has a go getter business attitude and Edmonton has a stay the course farming attitude. I will give credit to Mandel, he is trying but look at who he has to deal with, Stelmach the farmer.

They did approve 75 street as part of the inner ring road. AIRPORT thread! sorry for being off topic

I sure am...to PVR - but my flight is through SLC on Delta outbound and PHX on AWA inbound on days and at times that I choose. I also collect FF miles, sometimes make pit stops (when I feel like it) and frankly support ANY US airline over Air Canada ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. So shoot me. I am booking Europe as I type this - and am not interested in flying into LHR so that means fly to...er Seatac and outbound or SLC and on AF into Paris etc.................................................

When did they approve this? There are no trucks allowed on 75 Street between 90 Avenue and 98 Avenue. If that is what you consider an inner ring road, i've proved my point already. I guess it can be called an inner ring road with detours.

This is an article from the Edmonton Sun on November 4:
Quote:
The inner ring, as proposed, would see elevated, Yellowhead Trail-style freeways built on 170 Street and 75 Street. But city council dithered on this, choosing to believe a piecemeal solution - just an outer ring road - will work. Now, 50 Street has become the de facto inner ring road for truckers going from the Yellowhead to the Whitemud or vice-versa. They're pounding the hell out of roads that were not meant for the volume they're now getting, and traffic's often at a near standstill on both 50 Street and 75 Street. Council must get moving on an inner ring road. It's now looking as if 50 Street would be a better option for the inner ring. As council members dragged their feet, housing prices along 75 Street went through the roof and the heaviest traffic has seemingly chosen to detour onto 50 Street, even though that street's often maddeningly blocked by trains shunting rail cars.
This is not directly related to aviation but it is related indirectly. My point was that i agreed with murman and here was an example of the backward, slow, and inept actions of city council when swayed by a couple of hundred residents. Perhaps it was an election year when the protests went on. This is the same type of dribble you hear from Ron Hayter about how great the City Centre Airport is. Small town thinking in a large city just doesn't cut it.

I'm sure Lufthansa came to YEG and saw even one simple example that kept them moving quickly to YYC. No Transit to the airport. Whoever has been to Germany will realize what type of transportation/transit systems they have. I'm sure Gunter and Frederick from LH must have had a laugh and a few beers before moving on to YYC.

LO 044, I said they approved it, which they did in 1999's transportation master plan (page 48 49 http://www.edmonton.ca/RoadsTraffic/TMPMarch1999HRES.pdf) although the text says 75th street, the map shows 50th. So I dont know if it was amended or not. but text always trumps figures. Nothing has come of it, however, just like every other transportation master plan before this one. I cant see the city expropriating a linear mile of homes between 98th ave and 90 ave.
