All he did was show that Toronto doesn't lack stadiums/arenas and reminded people of what they have. The original boast of "my city has xxx while your city only has xxx for it's size" is ridiculous.

C'mon. That is Northland's vision to remain relevant. The city is recommending demolition as it would be cheaper to build a brand new six pad facility than to renovated and reconfigure Northlands.

Don't get upset. Be constructive. What are we overlooking here? The suburban arenas (Hershey Centre)? Varsity Stadium? What else?

I love how you're trying to paint the original post as innocent. "A reminder, before the prairie folks get too cocky" followed up by photos of Toronto's Stadiums and Arenas wasn't a friendly reminder that T.O's has a sufficient amount of stadiums, It was a superiority claim over 5 western cities

Naw, that's just your inferiority complex confusing you. Torontonians don't care. The Prairies aren't even on the radar. We're just all amused by the cockiness (masking inferiority) from the construction of a couple Football stadiums.

I don't have an inferiority complex. Edmonton is a great city, moving forward at a rate unseen in this country and Honestly I think it's right beside Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver in terms of sports capabilities and with a velodrome and hockey training centre on the way it won't be long till E-town can host any event it needs to.

That being said Winnipeg and Cow town have an impressive list of infrastructure as well.

I'm not just gonna lay down when someone claims Toronto is the centre of the universe. We get enough of that over here

There's already a cross country facility in Canmore (which was used in '88). Much like Vancouver, we'd use the new arena for hockey and the old one (in this case Saddledome) for figure skating and/or short track. Curling would probably be at Winsport arena. Not sure there's any interest in sharing with Edmonton but then again we're not even sure if Calgary will even bid at this point.

So if Calgary won presumably...

- the new arena and refurbished Corral Centre would be used for men's and women's hockey
- Saddledome would be used for short - track speed skating and figure skating
- Winspear Centre would be used for curling
- long track facility from 1988 would be refurbished and used for long track once again
- bobsled and luge track would be replaced at same site? I heard the old track is no longer up to current standards. Is that true?
- can they use the old ski jumps for the ski-jumping events or are those too dated as well and need of replacement?
- cross country skiiing and biathalon at 1988 venues?
- what about moguls, ski-cross, snowboarding?
- downhill skiing at Nakiska again or switch to Lake Louise?

The article did point out that with the likelihood of LA receiving the 2028 summer olympics chances are remote with Calgary winning the 2026 winter bid as the IOC tries to avoid having back-to-back summer/winter olympics on the same continent.

While some of Toronto's facilities are dated, they easily have the greatest number and variety of sports infrastructure in the country. With that said, one can really see the importance of the sporting culture in the United States versus Canada in the investment of infrastructure for both pro and amateur organizations.

Take the Twin Cities, with a population of 3.5 million, almost half the size of Toronto and compare facilities:

Baseball - Target Field (called best ball park experience in MLB) vs. Rogers Centre

Football - US Bank Stadium vs. BMO Field (formerly Rogers Centre prior to Argos move)

Hockey Arena - Xcel Energy Centre (formerly regarded as best arena in North America) vs. Air Canada Centre

Secondary Arena - Target Centre (basketball) vs. Ricoh Coliseum (AHL hockey)

College/University Stadium - TCF Stadium (gophers football) vs. Varsity and York

Secondary Stadiums - CHS Field (baseball) vs. Lamport Stadium (rugby and soccer)

Pro Soccer Stadium - future MLS Stadium vs. BMO Field

In every case, it appears the Twin Cities has Toronto beat for pro sports facilities, sometimes decidedly so. With that said, I don't think it would be wise to follow the US model of massive public subsidies for sports infrastructure forsaking other, more important matters.

Still nice to look at for us stadium/arena porn addicts.

Bob/Luge track is slated to undergo renovations regardless. Removing the ammonia refrigeration system and putting in a system with zoning ability rather than entire track, this is not a direct result of using ammonia though. Bob/skeleton start is being removed and all starts bob/luge/skel will be from Mens Luge start now, which will increase the technical aspect of bob/skel for first few turns. My brother spent a lot of years in the Luge(2 olympics) program and knows more what is happening than I do. But for the most part I think the track itself is still fine. Hosts all world cups still.

Ski jumps something to do with the outrun on the 90m tower not being up to snuff anymore and being unable to modify due to underground utilities in the area would require a new venue to be built I believe.
