If they are going to the trouble of building a giant new park and ride, I really hope there is a secure bicycle area there too.

Having rapid transit like this should help people who are lower on the income scale to live their life and get around with still relying on the expense of a car.

From a political perspective, park-and-ride makes sense to appease suburbanites.

From an urbanist and economic perspective, it makes no sense. You will get far more ridership and a better urban environment developing near a station than building parking lots.

Also, what happens when we are all using robo-ubers? Parking will no longer be necessary. And it's coming sooner than we think.

I currently take the bus to Coquitlam Centre Station every day, and the last thing that whole area needs is even more parking. What they should really do is join up with the Coquitlam Centre Mall and turn some of that parking into a park-and-ride. Take a look at the satellite view. See those two L-shaped parking lots on the north side of the Barnet Highway? Those rarely have any cars in them, why can't TransLink lease some of that space instead of putting down even more pavement?

Edit: Well, I see that the story is actually about the Douglas-LaFarge station, but still. There's loads parking already there.

What I see is that the effort is to preserve long term commuter parking
i.e. since other existing parking either does not allow long term parking (meters geared to high turnover)
or could disappear due to redevelopment (mall parking lots).

I guess I'm okay with a parking lot as long as there is a fee for use and it's a parkade not just surface lots. I don't know Canadian stats but in America, a country of roughly 325 million people has over 800 million surface parking lots. That's nearly 2.5 parking stalls per person of just surface lots not parkades, driveways, and garages. It's disgusting and it's a blight.

The planned P&R locations would be:
- Expansion of current Coquitlam Central Station parking lot [700 spaces]
- New parking lot behind RONA (currently a junk yard?) [300 spaces]
- Re-purpose the parking at Lincoln and Westwood (behind Henderson) as P&R [70 spaces]
- New parking lot south-east of Pinetree and Guildford (currently empty lot) [100 spaces]
- On-street parkings on Town Centre Blvd south of Douglas
- On-street parkings on Pinetree north of Town Centre Blvd
- On-street parkings on Westwood north of Lincoln
- On-street parkings on Ponderosa

We are not talking about a lot of spaces. More appealing would be a parkade at some of the locations with the bottom floor containing retail and either rooftop or underground parking.

Basically, the park and rides around Coquitlam Central Station are intended for Poco south of Lincoln Ave, the Ranch Park/Harbour Village neighbourhoods of Coquitlam, and Pitt Meadows/Maple Ridge, while the lots around Lincoln and Lafarge Lake Stations are meant for those living in Westwood Plateau and Burke Mountain in Coquitlam and Poco north of Lincoln Ave.

I grew up in Port Coquitlam and bus transit is terrible in the Tri-Cities, especially PoCo. Park and rides are absolutely essential for this part of the region.

They might have multiple ones?

I checked the Coquitlam yard on Saturday and they got 151-152 parked there.

It's done except for the tunnel, I believe. There might still be some work going on at the maintenance facility as well.

I can't wait until Evergreen line opens and they are running shorter trains than are run on the rest of the LIM system. The media will be awesome about it. We're lucky they aren't already complaining.

The longest trains that run on the SkyTrain system are three sets of Mark I trains totalling 6 Mark I cars end to end. Those are a fair bit longer than two of the Mark II trainsets coupled together. So it's good that they have three of the Mark I trains deployed on the Coquitlam branch; once they are all connected together, they will know with certainty whether the platforms and tracks can handle the length.
