It's going to look so forlorn in comparison with RSA that you'd think the owner would at least think about recladding.

My sweet Mom, who is from the New Orleans area, was in Mobile the last couple of days and she said they have this new building in Mobile, "That is beautiful, but, they need more, Sean. It looks weird there! It dwarfs everything else. Maybe they'll get some more..." Bless my Mom's heart...

The "suggested viewing area" is quite a ways away. Are they afraid of a crowd assembling at the convention center?

I can't remember what NOLA looked like when Shell was built but not yet the early/mid 80's boom that brought St. Charles Place, Energy, 909 Poyrdas, the Sheraton, etc... Funny, I think most of the tall buildings in NOLA other than Shell were built in a 2-3 year period.

From some views, the Mobile sklyine looks really good with the RSA, from others it looks a little stupid. Perhaps the new crown on the Riverview will balance it out a bit (along with Water Street Landing).

Side note - NOLA is still my favorite skyline south of the Mason Dixon. I don't care how many shiny scrapers are in Atlanta, Dallas, or Miami, they can't match the density, and beauty of the Crescent City's awesome skyline. Driving in from Mobile on 10 over the high-rise still gives me goose bumps (even though I do it 2-3 times per month).

Man, it seems like none of us our gonna be able to make it. I don't think I can either, but I'm gonna try my hardest. I hope some of you who can be there try to get closer up than BattleShip Park. It thats not possible, then I'm praying the Register takes some good shots.

I will be there to take pictures. And I don't really want to stand at Battleship Park, so I'll get closer.

I just got done watching the NBC 15 news story on it. They spent like 10 minutes talking about it. Luckily I had my camera right beside me. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you:

The spire itself, sitting somewhere north of downtown

Of course the video will be on NBC 15's website sometime soon, but it's not up yet, and I couldn't wait.

Wouldn't that make for a cool story if someone managed to steal the spire ?

Guess we can see an update on NBC 15 at noon.

Nevermind, forgot they don't run noon broadcasts on weekends.

"Blake, the project manager for the Atlanta-based Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback & Associates (TVS), said lighting on the spire will change colors with events. For example, there will be lighting appropriate for Mardi Gras and Christmas.

It also may affect the mood of the city. Lighting at the start of each week will get brighter as the weekend approaches, Blake said. The lights won't move, but just change color.

"This is a traditional building in a lot of ways - with a base, shaft and crown. A lot of buildings - you can look at the Empire State Building in New York - are built this way," Blake said in a telephone interview."

Hell yes.

Now that's pretty cool. The Mardi Gras colors will be nice to see at both of my parents' parades this year.

I wonder if the lights will be wired up immediately and turned on, or will they wait until the entire project is complete?

I would imagine until complete considering the electrical won't be ready to go once it's put on.
