Or be actively prevented - one has read occasional stories about this over the years, usually relating to certain nationalities of the Mediterranean persuasion. Other historical factors would have been immigrant women's employment in industries/services not requiring much English (eg clothing and footwear manufacturing) and the simple demands of raising a familiy and running a household (ie. a woman's work is never done ....) .

Not surprised at all. I was actually suspecting this. Self-hate is even more intense than hating the other guy. You should read Simone Weil... or maybe not.

This isn't about being an "Uncle Tom" because I don't care if Franco-Ontarians from Kapuskasing want to become Anglo-Canadians, Japanese or Russians.

That's their business.

But it bugs me when people of any group (think of Canadians who move to the U.S. as well) shit all over their old identity from the vantage point of the new one.

If people are so happy with their new lives then they should get on with their new lives and leave the rest of us alone.

Unless they have regrets?

Yes, people who have nothing to say should simply stop posting. Unfortunately for me I am pretty strongly opposed to censorship so it's against my principles to "report" fellow posters. Even if they personally attack and witch hunt me.

I guess if the signs don't bother you then this won't either, as it's also just the free market at work. And again, though it may make logical business sense, it's still uncomfortable.

Actually they could probably be taken to court, they should have said "Chinese speaking". It's just a symptom of the rampant ghettoization that Canadians like to pretend doesn't exist here.
