Might not be in St. John's:

Williams hopping mad with Mile One

Big scheduling conflict looms if IceCaps-Stars reach Calder Cup final

Quote:
“And we can’t even get an accommodation for the Calder Cup final?

“Whatever their commitments might and might not be, if they could only shift or move or accommodate or cooperate, that’s all we’re asking.

“And I’m telling you right now, all we’re getting is stonewalled at this point in time.”

Williams likens the IceCaps to a loyal customer, but suggests there is anything but a solid, working partnership between the hockey team and the rink.

“Pushback seems to be the way it is at Mile One,” he said. “There were problems with the St. John’s Fog Devils (of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League) before with Mile One, and I’m told the big part of their failure was they had difficulty finding accommodation and dealing with Mile One.

“Sure, we got a scoreclock, and sure, they finally straightened out the ice (the IceCaps and parent Winnipeg Jets had major issue with the Mile One ice surface last season), but our dealings with Mile One have not been great, that’s the nicest way I can put it.”

*****

Mile One being bitchy, Marine Atlantic cutting service to the mainland, the PCs committing hara-kiri, the NDP eating themselves, the Liberals squawking about BS, rolling blackouts to continue until 2017 because Newfoundland Hydro can't meet demand.

This really is the developing world.

Why does everything have to be such a shitshow? I love a little chaos, it's part of the old world charm here... but surely not everything has to be run by Uncle Cec in Bauline?

*****

EDIT: It'll be in St. John's. There's just a big gap between games:

Wow, game 4 is 5 days after game 3?! Someone really dropped the ball on the logistics there. But then, who can blame anyone associated with the Winnipeg Jets for not expecting to be in the championship finals

In any event, Go Caps Go!

It's too bad, but the event that is going on from Thursday to Sunday was booked 5 years ago apparently. IceCaps have only been here for 3 years.

Any idea what sort of event that would be? I'm looking at Mile One's website and there is nothing listed for June beside the IceCaps and a dog show this weekend.

Mile One has the Canadian Anaesthesiologists Society annual meeting/trade show booked for Friday, June 13 to Monday, June 16.

But, hey, a few extra days of Texan hockey players on George Street won't go astray. I can hear my friends already. "What's that? Come, we goes. I'm having one."

Game 3 of the Calder Cup finals is on. And it's a home game, so they started with our anthem. Video is older, though...

First Period over, 0-0, but St. John's is being out-shot.

I thought the bolded section was interesting. Long overdue IMO

New five-year CBA ratified by CFL and CFLPA
CFL.ca Staff June 13, 2014

TORONTO -- A new five year collective bargaining agreement has been officially ratified by both the Canadian Football League and the Canadian Football Players’ Association.

“This agreement provides stability for our teams at the same time it improves pay, health and safety, and mobility for players,” said Mark Cohon, Commissioner of the CFL.

“We’re looking forward to a successful season and working together to grow this great league.”

“The Players are committed to putting the best possible product on the field and are excited to get back to the game that we all love,” said CFL Players’ Association President, Scott Flory.

The new agreement will be in place until the later of May 15, 2019 or the first day of training camp in 2019.

However, if the nine teams’ aggregate revenues (excluding Grey Cup) increase by more than $27 million in any year of the agreement, both sides will renegotiate an increase to the salary cap starting in the 2016 season.

The agreement changes the way players are classified. Instead of being known as non-imports and imports, they will now be classified as nationals and internationals.

A player will be considered a national player if he was a Canadian citizen at the time of signing his first contract, was classified as a non-import prior to May 31, 2014, or was physically resident in Canada for an aggregate period of five years prior to reaching the age of 18.

In the past, a player could be born in Canada and have Canadian citizenship, but not qualify for non-import status if he received his football training outside of Canada. One example would be the sons of some former CFL players, who may have been born in Canada but learned their football in the U.S.

While some have long argued non-import players should simply be called Canadians, there remain some players in the league who were counted as non-imports even though they are not Canadian citizens.

The agreement also:

• Increases the current salary cap per team from $4.4 million to $5 million this year and an additional $50,000 a year in subsequent years to a total of $5.2 million in 2018.
• Sets the minimum any team must spend on players’ salaries at $4.4 million this year, and an additional $50,000 a year in subsequent years, to a total of $4.6 million in 2018.
• Increases the minimum pay for players from the current $45,000 to $50,000 this year and an additional $1,000 a year to a total of $54,000 in 2018.
• Increases pension contributions from the current $3,600 for clubs and $3,600 for players to $3,700 each in 2014 and an additional $100 each a year to a total contribution of $4,100 each in 2018.
• Provides a $1,500 ratification bonus per each rookie player, and $7,500 per each veteran player for ratification bonuses, with the union to determine the scale on which veterans will receive bonuses (with all such bonuses to be paid to players on team rosters as of June 22, 2014).
• Increases a team’s active roster from 42 to 44 players, and decreases a team’s reserve roster from four to two players.
• Amends the rules and regulations to provide for a six-game injured list, eliminating the nine-game injured list. Clubs are allowed to pull a maximum of two players off the six-game injury list early and without it counting against the salary cap for any player who continues to be on that list for more than six games.
• Amends the training camp protocol to allow only one practice a day to have contact.
• Amends in-season provisions to provide to allow only one practice a week to have contact.
• Eliminates the current requirement for an option year on all future contracts with the exception of first contracts for rookie players.
• Expands practice rosters from seven to ten players per team and, come the Fall, from 12 to 15 players.

“The CFL Players’ Association would like to thank our fans for their support and understanding during this process,” said Flory.

“I want to thank our players, teams and especially our fans for their patience during this time,” Cohon said. “Now it’s time to focus on what we all love: the great game of Canadian football.”

I would have like to see the CFL change the classification of Import/Non-Import (or Nationals and Internationals I suppose) so that a player would be considered Canadian/National/Non Import if they played for a single team for more than five consecutive years. Teams have a hard enough time fielding a competitive roster as it is but when injuries happen it can throw the whole roster out of whack depending on who the back up is. Allowing a team to consider a long term player as a 'national' would allow them to dress one more foreigh player if desired and keep the level of talent at a higher level. It would also reward teams for keeping a player under a long term. If they were traded etc. then the clock would reset.

I don't know, I want the league to stay Canadian. I don't care how long you've played for the team, you're still an international. Canadian football players need to have something they can aspire to.

The previous discussion about why Germany sucks at hockey definitely gives a little support to your argument (with which I completely agree).

Back in the 60s or so, I think there was such a rule; it was eventually phased out, but Lancaster was grandfathered in and was considered a "Canadian", granted he and his descendants did stay in Canada after his career (his grandson was the University of Regina quarterback a couple years back).

That's right. Ronnie was a non-import. I don't mind if they tweak the rule and the ratio a little, and maybe that could include introducing a third category for long-term CFL players from the US. But in my opinion they have to work it so that at least some starting positions must be filled by Canadians (non-imports). If it goes too far then Canadians will just become fodder for a taxi squad and that would deprive us of the pleasure of watching Canadian talent -- players who as they gain experience often become stars in the league.

Agree. The hope is that our CIS football programs develop to the point where talent coming out of those systems is comparable to the NCAA. Till that time comes, we need Canadian content rules in the CFL so domestic players can fulfill their potential.

The IceCaps are leading the Stars 3-0 in Game 4. If they win, the series will be tied again.

3-2... ooh.

I love that Hutch is getting so much love. He got a standing ovation for another awesome save tonight.

It makes me happy that Eastlink picked up the IceCaps broadcasts. The entire island gets their games now, so I can watch the finals. Which is awesome.

Gaahhh... third straight OT for IceCaps and Stars.

Caps were up 3-2 until the last minutes of the 3rd.

Stars goal wins the cup. IceCaps score, we're going to Game 6.

Pretty historic day for Canadian basketball. Cleveland might as well be Team Canada now. Definitely excited to see what Kyrie and Wiggins can do together.

Bennett, Wiggins, Thompson and Powell (who impressed me in MM for Stanford). Hey Raps, good luck with that bogus 'We The North' thing, especially when you draft a Brazilian.
