Cool driving videos, too, Mopacs. It gives a good look at how Austin appears in real life.
Just imagine the view when the Rainey St area towers get built.

Have any of our excellent forum photogs taken a recent downtown skyline picture from east of 35, looking dead-west? I never drive 35 anymore, but I had to take it north yesterday afternoon and - holy crap! - I didn't even recognize downtown from that angle. Of course, the view from my car on 35 was pretty close in so the scale was impressive, especially since I haven't seen the core from that angle in a long time. It would be interesting to get a reasonably close view of downtown from the top of some of those new east apartments like the Corazon.

Here are a couple recent East side views.

And I haven't got a photo, but I've been meaning to. There are some great views of the Bowie from East 12th as far away as Springdale and around Pleasant Valley and 12th. The angle of 12th puts the Bowie right at the end of the street, it's pretty amazing.

Video from 1965. This is pretty cool, one of the video segments shows the construction of the Westgate Tower.

Ah, Austin in its Golden Age! Mr. Galindo and I must have been at The University at the same time. I took stills of many of those views myself. That building they were demolishing at the beginning was the old MKT/SP train station. The trains used to stop traffic on Congress Avenue as they entered from or departed to south of Austin. Until 1948 or thereabouts, the Missouri Pacific depot was catter-corner across the street (where the Austonian is now). They moved it to the other side of Lamar Blvd. shortly after WWII; today, it's the Austin Amtrak depot. I remember vividly that my pediatrician's office was in the Houghton house (although I didn't know what it was called then). I associated it with getting shots, which I hated. It was one of many buildings of that style all built around the end of the 19th Century. They had all become subdivided for offices or apartments by the 1950s and most of them were demolished in the '60s, sadly. Austin back then was a charming, glorious little college town along the lines of Ann Arbor or Madison.

^Yes, I thought that was the old train station. There used to be a moonlight tower there until the 80s I guess when 301 Congress was built. Somewhere there is a photo of one of those trains crossing Congress which is a really odd sight for someone who wasn't alive then. That must have been quite the photo-op.

Trust me, it was an odd sight for someone who WAS alive then. I can't imagine what it was like when the MoPac depot was where the Austonian is now and both stations had trains in them. If you'll look on Googlemaps at the north side of the railroad bridge across Town Lake, you can barely see where the MKT tracks veered off to the right. If you follow the line of the old roadbed eastward a couple of blocks, the old railroad bridge is still there, alongside the bridge for the hiking trail, although I imagine that with all the construction going on down by the lake, it won't be there much longer. The trains continued eastward along Third Street and pulled into the depot until the last car was past Congress (or if the train was southbound, the engine stopped before crossing Congress. If you look, you can see how the line ran along Third to the creek, where it took a sharp turn north to Fourth and then east again, following the right-of-way that the commuter rail uses today.

That Texas archive where you got the film clip is a treasure trove! It's amazing that there is such a wealth of photos of Austin.

This is a pretty good website, too.

A great photo of the skyline Thursday night as a cold front blew through Austin. They were also testing the spotlights in Zilker Park for ACL Fest this weekend.

That cold front was neat to watch. I was outside barbecuing last night when it came through. It was odd because the clouds weren't very wide or thick. I could still see the moon through the clouds even while it was lightning. It was basically in and out of here in like 20 minutes. Right after it passed it cleared up again, and I could see the moon perfectly even while there was still intense lightning off to the east. Also as it was rolling through, I did see them testing the spotlights in Zilker Park for ACL Fest. it was an odd sight last night. Today since the air was so crisp, you could really hear the music in Zilker Park even though it's 4 miles away.

Kevin, that is one of the most amazing photos I've seen given all the elements in it. It should be framed and on the wall of an art gallery. Its a one of a kind. Love it!

Cool video! I think it's time to see if someone can strap some type of mini go-pro to one of the Congress bats.
