Trust me, it was an odd sight for someone who WAS alive then. I can't imagine what it was like when the MoPac depot was where the Austonian is now and both stations had trains in them. If you'll look on Googlemaps at the north side of the railroad bridge across Town Lake, you can barely see where the MKT tracks veered off to the right. If you follow the line of the old roadbed eastward a couple of blocks, the old railroad bridge is still there, alongside the bridge for the hiking trail, although I imagine that with all the construction going on down by the lake, it won't be there much longer. The trains continued eastward along Third Street and pulled into the depot until the last car was past Congress (or if the train was southbound, the engine stopped before crossing Congress. If you look, you can see how the line ran along Third to the creek, where it took a sharp turn north to Fourth and then east again, following the right-of-way that the commuter rail uses today.
