Big business down there in the "poverty industry"... An interesting read (if a little slanderous at times) is the "DOWNTOWN EASTSIDE ENQUIRER". S/He calls the people opposed to change in the area povertarians (people who earn a living in the lucrative poverty industry). See http://downtowneastsideenquirer.blogspot.com/

Poverty is a lifestyle? o_O

These people are freaks. I thought this statement was mind boggling: "They make you pay for a spot to live on the planet you were born onto!!"

That's hilarious. A perfect example of why Marijuana is still illegal.

Or at least I hope the person behind that statement was on some sort of drug...

LOL I hope so too. But some are just mentally-ill and need attention.

for some people it is

I have heard of woman who would rather pump out kids and collect government money than get a job

they get welfare, subsidized housing, grocery money, child bonus, gst rebates, daycare, handouts and such

at christmas they can get groups to donate presents and dinners etc.

they say they are better off living that way than getting a job cause they lose the cheap housing, grocery money etc. so its in their favour to remain unemployed with kids and they get to be stay at home moms

so one could argue they are choosing a "poverty" lifestyle

^ i have a friend who knows someone that has been living off welfare and social housing for the past 25 years...has kids, both he and his wife are perfect capable of working (mentally and physically), but they choose not to.

It disgusts me when so many who actually need this help aren't getting it because they choose to be asswipes. We need to ship these folks off to Sudan.

So they just finished paving the entire back side to make it a parking lot, and now they are going to add on the site a school and an assisted care housing,
would love to see the plans on this one, are they encroaching into the park?

can wait to see this one

No they wouldn't encroach on the park - at least the school has always been in the offiial community plan for the site.

As for ripping up the asphalt - maybe at the event rates they charge GM Place visitors, they can make it up pretty quickly!

Don't hold your breath. Canada is not really on the radar of the British, I doubt they'd be much interested in this.

I went to the chinese new years parade last week, and spent some time walking around the area. It is really changing, and fast! I particularly liked the area up the street on pender, where they are completing EAST, but the little hub outside of Tinseltown, shown in this photo, is turning out great!

Two thumbs up to the revitalization of the downtown eastside and chinatown areas!

There's a sign on the 175 Robson site that says "Hilton coming soon" or something like that. There's a rendering on the sign too.

******

L'Hermitage is setting up a big display centre on the ground floor to sell the remaining units in the building - LOUD red wrap on the windows - at first I thought they were the permanent colour for the spandrels - luckily not.

******

A new awning is being installed above the door to the Westin Grand on the Robson frontage.

******

Got a mailout for a City open house regarding the triangular Cambie Bridgehead site but I misplaced it. May have been this week. I think the height of the taller of two towers was in the 300ft range.

Yes, 17 units remaining at L'Hermitage, their current sales center (688 Richards) is closed, new one opens up February 23rd in the building itself. Residents are to begin moving in very soon.

I haven't seen a rendering of the Hilton... any way anybody can get a photo of it? Any website or marketing team associated with it yet?

Well... you can't say it doesn't fit the area. Seems they aren't allowed to think outside the box down there...
