As I said, it's a case-by-case thing.

If the goalie was lying face-down on the ice on the other side and the net was wide open and the shooter hit the post, then that's 100% luck.

At the other extreme of the spectrum, if the goalie is seeing the puck coming and blocking the puck's way with his pad in a position where the pad is basically touching the post, and the puck hits the post, that's 100% a save by the goalie -- defending successfully the area that matters (the opening) with the post being part of the perimeter, which the goalie doesn't need to shield.

In other words, not all cases of the puck hitting the post (which we call "a post", in short) are equal. Each needs to be analyzed, because it can be anywhere from 100% luck to 100% goalie skill, and anywhere in between.

In my experience, you create your own luck.

Sure, it was licky the puck bounced off the goalpost, but, the goalie created a situation where the shooter had no choice but to aim for the post and pray for a miracle.

If you have a wide open net and clang one off the post, I guess that could be bad luck.

But if a goalie is actively pressuring you (As was the case when Drai was in alone and hit the post) I will give that one to the goalie.

Yes, if the goalie messed up and left a wide open net to shoot at the the shooter hit the post, then the goalie got lucky because 95%+ of the time the shooter will score. If he has the right angle and makes himself wide enough to only leave small openings to shoot at and the puck hits the post, that's good goaltending.

Sometimes, particularly in soccer, but also quite a bit in hockey, I hear commentators say the shooter was unlucky to hit the post. No, he wasn't. He was just not accurate enough at that moment.

Hitting the post (or crossbar) isn't a shot on net. Just like the numerous other shots that go high or wide. It's just closer than them, and sometimes you can get a bounce in.

Poor game overall by the entire Oilers team, terrible giveways (6x Van's numbers), some bad luck, poor reffing and some of the weakest shots attempts I've ever seen.

I must have counted 10 times they could have driven the net, but instead circled back ending in a nothing play.

Van did a good job clogging things up again and have a incredible breakout/transition speed.

I was at the game and it felt like the Oilers were playing in November.

It's fine I guess. Z got $5k fine for the cross check and McD got nothing for the two handed slash.

That's where I have a problem. $5k is nothing for these guys, McD should have gotten that as well. It's there because then it goes on their record for future decisions. McD gets away with it again.

Hyman(?) also cross checked Z after this exchange and got nothing. Z needed a few stitches on his face after the game.

McDavid sold it by ramming his face into Soucey’s stick. And he wasn’t hurt at all. I think the stick actually caught him in the upper chest area, otherwise he would have at least a cut or some teeth missing.

McDavid and Draisaitl played an absurd 29:42 and 29:20. That tells you how much faith the coach has in the rest of the team. That can’t be sustainable at all.

Compared to? I'm not blind to see some shit from the Oilers too, but last night had some pretty terrible calls.

Upon further reflection, what the hell was our coach doing last night and why was there no response to McD getting put through the grinder? It was discombobulated and without care that I'm honestly confused as a fan and season ticket holder.
