In a circa 2010 confidential .../ unpastable demand graph sent to me by a YVR contact, people were asked their first choice as a new overseas destination.
Paris at that time, led demand (18.6% of all demands) which we finally got. But second choice was Rome at 9.6%, then Melbourne at 9.4% and (at that time, DBX with 8.5% demand, then Osaka with 7.4% first destination request, then Delhi at 7.2%, and other destinations which were then requested less but now are high yield, important routes, like Guangzhou, so things can change for sure. (It had only a 3.9% request at the time, such irony)

Anyway, ROME. Too much low yield family traffic and / or holiday stuff to make it go, I guess. Seems worth investigating, somehow, though, given apparent demand for it; unless changed.

YYZ finally posted April numbers so I thought I'd show you how YVR is stacking up against the other top 5 Canadian airports....

The figures are for April 2016 compared to April 2015 and YTD - the rankings for growth are the same for April and YTD for ease of presentation:

YVR up 5.3% YTD up 7.6%
YYZ up 2.7% YTD up 4.9%
YUL up 1.5% YTD up 4.2%
YYC down 2.2% YTD up 1.3%
YEG down 12.9% YTD down 8.5%

All in all YVR is still doing very well... as expected.

Other airports reporting:

YOW down 4.5% YTD down 0.5%
YYJ up 2.6% YTD up 3.8%
YLW down 0.6% YTD up 6.2%
YQB down 0.7% YTD up 0.8%

I suppose a business park on Sea Island next to Canada Line is better than Richmonds other car-dependent business parks, but I still wish office jobs would rather be in Downtown for more office towers to go up. Logistically both are close to YVR by rail. That is, unless they are talking about businesses like Canada Post which naturally are better off next to the airport.

What is disappointing is the outlet mall is predominantly one level of retail. Depending on flight levels etc. those building could have housed office space above the retail. What would have been better is something like uptown in Victoria (http://shopuptown.ca/).

The example they cite in the article of gordon food services that is basically a warehousing and repack facility. I don't know them specifically, but most warehouse buildings I have been in usually have an over abundance of office space. Usually it is located on a mezzanine level above the main warehouse space, in many cases these types of companies end up with far more office space than you need due to how the building is forced to be laid out.

First scheduled KE 747-8I leaves ICN tomorrow (22 June) bound for YVR.

This passenger bird is a lot more rare than the A380 as it is only flown by LH, CA and KE.

ETA at YVR is 12:50pm on the 22nd.

Next up (8 days later) is the return of the flying roo 744 to SYD for a longer season this summer.

And the new Westjet domestic routes to YHM, YXU and YHZ all kick off next week too.

Just being a geek for a bit, I looked at some of the historic stats for YVR traffic. The "Misc. Intl." category has really picked up, wow... In just 4 months this year, traffic in this category is already the same or more than in ALL of 2002 and 2003. So I take it this is basically just Latin America (sun destinations + Mexico City?). I think Australia/NZ are in Asia Pacific, but might be wrong? It seems like a lot of extra Misc. Intl. but if so, that's awesome! Any feedback confirming this category would be appreciated (link here for historic stats):

I think you are right. I've always understood Asia / Pacific to include NZ and Australia. Misc Int'l would most likely be the sun routes and MEX. Throw in a new daily flight to MEX on AM and that's a significant amount of new capacity.

Edit: looking at the table MISC INT'L increased by about 300 pax per day so 150 inbound and 150 outbound... Pretty much matches the new Aeromexico capacity.... assuming everything else's was static... I don't think there was that much more misc INT'L capacity added this winter.

Email YVR and ask them... or tweet them or ask on FB. They are usually pretty open.

Yes that makes sense Johnny Aussie! Makes you think how little the JAL flights that used to go to Mexico CIty added to the volumes... The fact that in 4 months we eclipsed 12 months in 2002/03, back when JAL had 747s on that route, and Mexicana had their dailies.

AvgeekYVR got a video of Korean's first 7478i landing the other day. Looks fantastic! Not as big as the 380 but certainly much more handsome.
