This is from those people getting evicted from 'The Annex' building we talked about a week or so ago.
What are all of your thoughts?
Personally, while its sad that these people are being evicted, I think it's insane to demand RDA Danny Walz to resign. To me, it's clearly an example of people misunderstanding who the 'bad guy' (if there even is one, really) is and trying to find someone to blame. As mentioned before, many of the individuals were paying as low as $500 a month to live on South Temple, one of the most expensive streets in the city. They had to have known something like this was coming eventually.

Gentrification is so difficult.
From a systemic point of view, I love to see supply increase. Building more units should stabilize rents, theoretically. But we never manage to build enough. And sadly, new product doesn't displace old upscale product— it displaces the poor. The most vulnerable. 100% of the time!
I sympathize. I have a freaking STEM master's degree. But I'm single. And
I'm priced out of Salt Lake City now. We can't ALL move to Texas. Gosh, what must it be like for blue collar people? Or those below the poverty line?
Mark my words, if American cities don't get their crap together, we're going to see a resurgence of bullying federally-funded public housing in a HUGE way. Even I am starting to view Pruitt-Igoe in a more friendly light these days. And that's not good.

All I can figure is a new *statewide* ordinance which says you have to replace the housing you eliminate, at guaranteed (CPI adjustable) rents to the very people you displace. Kicking out 10 units at $500/mo.? Gotta include that in your new development! And you have to find them similar housing in the meantime during construction.
Of course, good luck convincing the circus atop State Street to vote for THAT.
