Gorgeous, Scraper.

This post made me consciously notice a misconception I have. Seeing that style of skyline, I imagine at street level it's tower-in-a-park style, which I hate, but I know from what I've seen here of Victoria over the years that it's very well-built at street level (to my preferences). Interesting juxtaposition to me.

Love it too. It would feel right at home on Sherbrooke street.

The Château St-Louis just changed hands (lower left). The building, built in 1925, is indeed pretty nice but I've always assumed the owner would build a new building on the surface parking lot in front of it. It is such a wonderful location and would have a good densifying potential. However, it is classified as an heritage building by the City so I wonder if a new construction in front of it would be allowed...

Would be nice to see a building built on the parking lot in a similar style and the creation of a courtyard between them, maybe with a garden and water feature.

Love that building in Quebec and the whole sector actually. Proof that there is a whole lot more to that wonderful city than just Old Quebec.

The PDF is looking good on the west side. Those new buildings frame the place perfectly. The PDF will be flanked by two giant towers on the south side, the only weak spots now are the MAC and the north side.

delicious Montreal shots.

Are most of the commercial buildings in Fort Langley legitimate, in terms of being dated? Or are most of them ersatz (false facades)?

It has been more than 20 years since I spent any time in Langley (other than driving through it on Highway 1).

I think most of them are legitimate. There might be a few that aren't.

I really like Ft. Langley. It's a bit of a hidden gem in Metro Vancouver. Most Vancouverites probably haven't been there since they were in elementary school.

It's a mix of old and new, I really don't know how old some are I don't think they go back that far. Some look like they are from the 60s or 70s and have been aged recently when they got fixed up. They have signs that describe some of the older buildings I will try pay attention.

In this pic the one on the right is old but the one on the left is newer.

Main Street (Glover Road) Fort Langley is a mix of original buildings with facsimiles from the 60's to the present. But, all of them are variations on the original constructions, built in quite similar forms and ways. Whether they are legitimate or ersatz isn't a worthwhile question unless you are into 'carbon dating' wood plank etc.. Fort Langley is a gem for many reasons. The 'historic' main street is worthy because of its consistency, scale, and co-existence of its buildings as a whole. It also has a good relationship to the river and the National Historic Site. The neighbourhoods, while not particularly special, are well integrated, and defined by a very nice combination of forest and farmland in what is a hilly part of the Fraser Valley.

I have never understood why Fort Langley doesn't have a higher profile within the region. Maybe if it were not dominated by your typical tourist businesses, although this doesn't seem to bother the people out for a Sunday drive on their Harley's. Definitely a great place for a spring afternoon escape from town.

that's cool. I like the hidden gems. I recall stumbling upon Steveston (Richmond) in 1994, long before it was gentrified. I ended up moving there. Ladner has (or had?) an old part too.

A few pictures from Victoria this week:

Today I checked out the Art Deco BC Power Commission building that has a proposal for an 18 storey hotel/residential addition above the four storey base. Most of the interior will be retained as well, which is good news.

From the local paper, this man and his neighbours have created a flower tribute to Ukraine.

Finally news today that 747 Fort Street has been put up for sale, good news because it includes one of the few remaining parking lots in behind it. This 4K video has some good partial views of the Victoria skyline and the building/lot in question:
