Painted or scrubbed, doesn't matter to me. My interests is to see if they do the whole building (which I don't understand why they wouldn't) and what it'll look like when completed between the columns and in between the windows.
It's a little strange that they're only painting the top portion of the UA tower, but I personally don't mind the way the building looks as it is. I'm actually staying at the Ace Hotel in Portland right now, and it's lived up to the hype IMO. They really made it a point to bring in high quality food and drink businesses to their ground floor spaces, and the lobby is always a bustling hangout. If they can pull it off in LA, it'll be a game changer for the area. In less than a year, the block between 8th, Broadway, 9th, and Spring could very well be the coolest part of downtown.
They are definitely painting the rest of the building. From the moment construction started, I've seen them testing paint samples. My guess is, since the spire is metal, and was deteriorated, they started renovating that first, since it would take the longest.

Paint the stone? That would be a mistake just like Figaro painting over their beautiful facade. Ace had scaffolding up around the entire building a month or two ago and then took it down. If they were going to clean or paint the building that would have been the time.
It's white because they painted it so. They had scaffolding around the entire building a few months ago and took it down without cleaning or painting so I have to assume only the tower portion will be that off-white.
If anyone cares, in the trailer that came out today for the movie 'Her' there are a ton of images of a near-future DTLA. It took me a moment to realize that certain buildings were there when I watched it they were so well integrated.

I think some of the stuff shot on the ground was in Shanghai (or maybe Singapore?), if I'm not mistaken.

We'd either be extremely old or dead by the time LA is anywhere close to that. Still, interesting concept. But they left out the Courtyard Marriott
Heh, makes me think back to some NIMBY story about residents in the hills complaining about skyscrapers blocking their view. It might never happen. But that would definitely be an epic Los Angeles.
I contacted the Councilman's office and they said "Angel's Knoll is closed during the pending transfer from the CRA to a successor property owner".
That is all I know!
I got the same response from Huizar's office. In a follow up where I asked about the future of the Knoll section, she said it was likely to remain a park and that there is no successor property owner yet. It is being prepped for sale or transfer.
It's not really isolated, as someone mentioned above. Many people live within a few blocks of it. It's also at the tourist hub of CGM, Angels' Flight and Cal Plaza. I've seen a lot of confused people standing around all sections of this area the last few weeks. It's a real shame it's closed. It could be years before it reopens.
A lot of unexpected love for Angels Knoll here. The view is nice and its in a good location but I feel like it stops there. The grass is brown and dry. The nearby stairs have the most concentrated smell of urine I've ever experienced in any city. You can't help but feel like you're surrounded by a homeless garrison. It isn't the beautiful park that people make it out to be but it certainly has potential. In fact that entire corner could have amazing potential if it was completely redone given its location next to GCM and Angels Flight.
Given the likely options and chances that my above dream could come true, I'd rather it be developed into Cal 3.

My exact sentiments.
I'd also add that the view might not be so nice in years down the line, since the land across the street will probably be developed at some point.

Good, I hope so. Angels Knoll is totally a lost cause in my book. That place grosses me out completely so the praise its received on this forum took me completely by surprise. That area is just an exclave of Skidrow.
^^ I find it hard to get excited about a project that was seemingly announced forever ago and has had basically zero visible progress this entire time. And it still has a year to go!
