Agreed - but the time has obviously come for building owners in these areas of Winnipeg to start shiting or for the sake of progress, just consider to get themselves off the pot.

It's great we got lucky that the City unwittingly retained all these buildings when they likely would be knocked over in the way of progress as you explain.

However at this point in time, there really is no excuse left to hoard these buildings.

There’s always so many cop cars driving around downtown, and never any on foot. That needs to change.

I don’t understand why the city doesn’t say “thanks for your valued opinion” then just carry on. Ridiculous.

Because Jason Schreyer wants to get re-elected as city councilor for Elmwood-East Kildonan. And usually what ever the area councilor wants the others in the Community Committee agree with even though it may not be in the best interests of that part of the community.

Credit to the locals, they turned out in numbers to the city committee meetings. They used to process and got what they wanted.

I feel, in this case, the development has the same impact as the original did. They removed some units and removed the road approach from Kimberley at Hershey St. In the end, it'll still be a similar sized building covering a lot that has been vacant for a long long time. Too much power given to the locals to disrupt a business whos bringing people and tax dollars. This wasn't a 40 storey tower going in like the one by Chief Peguis.

Who is still locking their bike through only a wheel?

Would Parlour staff have actually done anything about it if they noticed in time? That doesn't really jive with their ideology:

They probably would have said "Oh look, those poor men obviously need this bike a lot more than it's owner does, here let's give them the contents of our tip jar too"

Come on...

While they are kind-hearted hippies, they're also entrepreneurs. That, and Main Street Project is a solid organization.

Don't really get why they are hippies but ok.

If I was popping into a 30 minute gym class at Community at 2 pm on a weekday, I'd think with the amount of people around that would be enough.

I think anyone to the left of Stephen Harper is a hippie in Wolf's worldview.

Don't get why the COW has the police in two man cars, US jurisdictions, the RCMP, OPP etc. all use one man cars, increase the police presence with the same manpower, cars are cheap compared to what the actual cost for officers is. But of course it's all a union thing and blah, blah, blah all about safety and yet US cities far more dangerous all employ one officer cars!

Especially downtown, take half the cops that just ride around in cars and put them on the street. I almost never see cops walking the beat downtown, and I'm starting to think that's a big part of the problem. Both BIZs keep adding foot patrols which maybe is good, but at the end of the day they aren't cops, and everyone knows it.

Been a while since I have been that way but it used to be the RCMP based out of OakBank used to run one man cars. The challenge is it was often two cars working in fairly close proximity to each other due to safety issues. While lots of places may run one man cars I would not be surprised to see the number of officer deaths is significantly higher in one man jurisdictions v two man jurisdictions. The other aspect is this is likely deep in the police union contract and not something that will easily be changed as it is an employment safety issue, similar to shields for transit drivers.

So I was curious about the new string lighting that goes over Smith in front of The Burt. Looks like TNSE teamed up with the city and BIZs to make the triangle park (and Smith between it and the theatre) usable as extended event space in summer. It's called The Burt Backyard.

Well that’s a good use of an orphaned area.

I am not opposed to businesses adopting private spaces in some instances and providing a proprietary atmosphere. Notwithstanding its public space, this model creates an atmosphere more inviting for more people to use in a way acceptable to most..

On recent empty building topic, the city is mulling over an empty building fee. The fee would be 1% of assesed value and come into effect after 5 annual inspections.

Too bad they couldn't have bought a couple of extra strings of lights and sent them over to the Osborne village BIZ, since it's apparently so difficult for them to maintain 2 damn strings of Christmas lights....

Well, I don't know that that's much of a measure. Harper may indeed have been on the right, he didn't shake many trees and he seems to have run the government fairly well even with his leadership style.

Maybe Franco?

Totally, and there's really no disruption to traffic as the Burt generally only has events evenings and weekends, when it's not a big deal for traffic to take the turn to King before turning left on Notre Dame.

This is a good start. Hopefully the 5 years goes retroactive so they can start taxing them immediately.

Ya just take those damn things down already. The 5 bulbs that work look way worse than just not having them at all. It's like all the banner posts missing banners on South Osborne. It's way worse to call attention to all them missing than just not even pretend like there should be something there at all.
