These seem very Scandinavian, look like they would be plucked out of Oslo or something.

Block F looks hideous, from the "Chinese suburb" fake-looking stone townhouses, to all that white spandrel... why is white spandrel a thing now? Spandrel used to be for covering up floor slabs or columns within an otherwise-glass wall, not used as the primary cladding... wtf

Generous glazing were one of the main things that normal people liked about highrise condo living - now banned thanks to "sustainability" building code changes. And worse suite layouts, uglier buildings, and higher construction costs. Pure shite across the board, making urban living significantly worse, all so some nerds in sandals can give triumphant PowerPoint presentations at niche conferences.

That's the big tragedy with the latest sustainability push... it should've been about making better windows, not less windows

I was in Westbrook Village few weeks ago and am always surprised how narrow they have built all new roads in that neighborhood. If their intention was to calm traffic down, I think they have badly overdone it. Every road has super narrow street parking bays on both sides and there is very poor visibility to pedestrians or kids jumping on street from in-between parked cars. Also no space for cyclists, making passing them dangerous despite the crawling speeds.

I have seen the same with few other newer residential area and think it does the complete opposite from improving traffic safety...

I used to live there as a carless grad student and have never thought pedestrian safety was an issue, nor have I witnessed anything remotely dangerous. Cars travel far slower along the streets so cyclists integrate really well into the traffic. There is still the possibility of adding a bike lane by removing one side of street parking, but I think the traffic speed is slow enough such that cyclists can navigate the neighborhood just fine.

Thanks for a local and pedestrian perspective. My impression is that of a driver and the visibility one has of his surroundings is poorer there than many other places. Some swerving is also required when there is opposing car traffic, I have found.

That's nothing Brock Commons Phase 2 $156 million for 595 rooms ($262K a room, just joking though there's a lot of mixed-use spaces in the project which probably increased the budget)

Some 4 major projects will go ahead in the near future. All in relatively near proximity from each other. I'll be moving out of the UBC in about a year or so, but hoping to see the start of them all.

School of Biomedical Engineering (Old building already demolished.)
Brock Commons Phase 2 (Already under construction.)
Gateway Building
Recreation Centre North
