Alice Harte Charter School Progress

$26 million, 3-story Alice Harte Charter School in Algiers

Alice Harte Elementary was once a jewel of Algiers, a school whose hallowed, albeit leaky halls lured parents, begging and finagling for spots for their children. The school's reputation had dimmed by around 2005, when Hurricane Katrina hit, and the school became part of the Algiers Charter Schools Association.

For the past four years, Alice M. Harte Charter School classes have been held in modular buildings next to JoEllen Smith Living Center on Gen. Meyer Avenue. The old Harte campus, which was plagued with leaky roofs and cramped classrooms in portable buildings at the corner of Eton Street and Berkley Drive, was demolished, and a new, 111,000-square-foot, $26 million-plus campus is being constructed in its place...

Kingsley House plans $12.5M expansion

By: Greg LaRose, Editor July 14, 2014 0

A project to meet the high demand for early childhood care and senior services for the low-income population is expected to take shape soon in the Lower Garden District.
Kingsley House, a United Way-partner nonprofit serving families and senior citizens, will build a 24,000-square-foot addition across Constance Street from its existing campus in the Lower Garden District. (Rendering: Trapolin-Peer Architects)

Kingsley House, a United Way partner organization serving southeast Louisiana since 1896, will build a 24,000-square-foot expansion next to its existing campus on Constance Street. It will provide additional space for a Head Start site and facilities for adults and seniors needing medical support.

....

Trapolin-Peer Architects is handling design for the expansion. Partner Peter Trapolin said the project earned approval of the Historic District Landmarks Commission with only minor adjustments. Its brick façade will resemble the existing Kingsley House buildings, where the organization has been based since 1920.

Thanks for the pics Chris, I know it's not easy juggling a camera and a steering wheel at the same time....just wondering, the old (1950's) buildings on Canal near the new hospital in your photos, are these to be demo'd? I would think yes......

I realize there is a statement made with the design, and sometimes it can be done tastefully, but I'm already tired of looking at it. Staggered windows on a rectangular building is becoming a cliche imo and that's not good seeing as how these buildings will be there for a long time.
Completely agree, I think they are already out of style.

On another note, rising rents in the last 17 of 18 quarters!, wish we could get some more parking lots converted. http://neworleanscitybusiness.com/bl...-demand-rents/

Wasn't someone just bringing up this question? I can't read the article but I do agree that there still isn't enough construction to keep pace with the growing population. Considering that the population grew by about 9000 last year and the CBD is one of the most desirable locations, the 1000 or so apartments under construction won't be enough to keep rents from steadily rising, especially with the new hospitals and businesses moving into the CBD.

The situation is the same with hotel rooms - demand and rates are rising, but very very rooms are being added. I can only think of the Drury expansion and the HRI Barronne project which might add 250 rooms or so.

Also I agree that something should be done with the lot next to Piazza d'Italia. I know the DDD is looking at adding more green space, so that would be a good candidate. Or if not the whole lot, perhaps part of it could be a small park and they could build a garage in the back to replace/augment the parking and help pay for the upkeep. Perhaps then some of the proposed developments in that area could lease some spaces and quiet some of the NIMBYs!
Plus the Piazza itself could be made greener and a little more inviting/useful. A really distinctive water feature or perhaps an amphitheater-like set up to hold concerts would be great.

As always thanks for the updates and pictures Tennis - they are much appreciated.
Going back and reading some of the older posts.....I think an amphitheater would be another good use for the piazza d'italia. .....is south market still developing plans for a hotel? How is office space in the CBD these days....any need to build? Or is vacancy rampant? Anyone have suggestions on Web pages showing current availability in the CBD?

I don't think the jokes are all that funny especially when they're inside jokes......I'm all for a return to authenticity at the French Market, the old pictures show how things remained the same until 10 to 15 years ago many moving here may not remember this, so I think the pics help....there is talk of improving the mistakes of the past ...
..as far as the piazza...I couldn't think of a better use for that white elephant that has sat there year after year with relatively nothing happening than to create a world class market.....
I for one don't know the politics of how that could happen.....but I do know politics are involved and can ruin any idea that's proposed....no one can fool any one of us otherwise....have you been watching the news in nola? That's business as usual...
Former mayor gets 10. No pipe dreams, just a desire to improve the community.....
Ok......aaaahhhhhhhhhhhh ....let's try again!!!!!!

I'm a daily lurker and occasional poster on here. I agree with Tennis. I used to be excited to see a new page because it meant something must've been announced. Now it just means that a few people are chatting away. It's very inconsiderate to a lot of people who have been using this page FOR A LONG TIME. And you're going to chase away the people who made this page what it is -- the best place to learn what's being developed in New Orleans.

On a different note, I talked to a check out clerk at Trader Joe's in Baton Rouge today who said the owner was scouting locations in New Orleans. I think the old Walgreens on Tchoupitoulas would be an outstanding location, although I'm partial to the abandoned Schwegmann's on Annunciation.

I've only been to one Trader Joe's (in Houston), but it would seem that the Schwegmann's site is way too big. The Tchoup site would seem to be perfect, especially considering income levels in that area, though I'd imagine TJ looks for a somewhat younger demographic. Good to hear though.

From the FAQ:

"Can I block posts, emails and messages from specific users?

If there are particular members that bother you and you do not want to see their posts or receive Private Messages and Emails from them, then you can add these members to your 'Ignore List'. There are several ways to do this:

Through your User Control Panel: User CP, Settings & Options, Edit Ignore List. Then, type their name into the empty text box and click 'Okay'."

Yes, I agree with keeping the nonsense down. Keep it to articles, facts, or pictures about real things that are going on. Of course, some well-based opinions and historical pictures can be appropriate, but let's try to leave out pages and pages of "pie and the sky things" that just aren't going to happen. This is a development thread, not fantasty.

Though these are small I still find them exciting! Technically the first Cane's in NOLA city limits is open in Riverwalk, but the first stand alones are opening tomorrow and a week from tomorrow!

It's more about expanding businesses (even though they're local they've ignored us for years) recognizing the city is a place TO BE than just "oh wow we get 2 more fast food joints."
