Nah, let’s do it the ontarian way: fill the lake edge to slip in the other set of lanes.

The reality is, the lakes are quite deep at the shoreline. Doing that means a lot more fill than you really want to do. Besides, this isn't the 1950s where roads can ignore the environment.

"I love Quebec, but we must admit that the state of its roads is a bad joke. It is even a subject of saucy advertising."

The billboard in the photo shows some swiss cheese with the phrases "proud sponsor of the streets of Montreal"

- Seems the most recent 4-laned sections do not include median barriers, this is concerning. One section had upright reflectors in the median (but no barrier) - WTF ?
- The main intersection in Revelstoke is a joke and an accident waiting to happen. Looks like a traffic circle was built to try and improve things rather than doing it properly with an interchange.
- BC highway standards appear to have deteriorated over time. Older twinned sections include a grass median where possible and concrete barriers where a median is not possible (the Coquihalla for example). Later twinned sections eliminated grass medians but have concrete barriers. And as mentioned, some of the most recent sections have no barrier.
- Also, newer twinned sections do not include a 3rd lane for trucks to use as a climbing lane on steep grades.
- The TCH east of Vancouver needs to be expanded from the current 2 lanes each direction as it's been like that since at least the 1970s. 3 lanes each direction out to Chilliwack would be nice.
- It seems 4-laning west of Golden for about 45kms would be pretty simple and inexpensive (by BC standards). Wish they would tackle this low hanging fruit and get a decent chunk done at once.
- I can confirm a traffic signal has been added to the TCH at Field. Unfortunate that we're still adding lights to the TCH.

On the Island:
- Was surprised the TCH entering Victoria from the north reduces from 4 lanes to 3 (or 2) lanes. I thought the highway would get wider (not narrower) entering the largest city on the island.
- The rest of the TCH between Victoria & Nanaimo (as far as I went) was 4 lanes but was littered with traffic lights (a very BCey thing to do).

My intent is not to pick on BC. I really wish national highways were a much higher priority for the Federal Government. IMO the Feds should be developing minimum standards for a system of TC Highways and dictating those standards as well as footing 90% of the bill for upgrading these highways.

I think the best I can hope for before I leave this life is for a TCH in BC that is continuously 4-laned from the west to Salmon Arm, and from the east to the Glacier Park east boundary. That would leave from Salmon Arm to the east Glacier Park boundary to 4-lane. I think an alternate route will need to be found for the 3-Valley Gap section.

Anyway - this has all been discussed before, just had to vent - thanks all.
I agree with everything you said. I just did that drive too. Time for this country to put on its big boy pants and finish our ONLY cross Canada highway.

Something I was thinking of recently:

The Trans-Canada Highway begins or ends in Victoria BC at Beacon Hill Park.

The other end of the highway is in St. John's NL along the Outer Ring Road and there isn't really any signage as far as I know telling you that you're at the end or beginning. I know that the TCH once ended in downtown St. John's from what I've read but of course that is no longer the case.

I feel that it would be a good idea to have the highway begin (or end) at Signal Hill. It would be great for the experience and of course for taking photos. I've driven the entire TCH just for the record. Beacon Hill Park should also be a National Historic Site in my opinion rather than a city park.

How do you all feel about that? SHH, I especially want to hear from you.

In the book 'A Road For Canada' (TCH History) it says the Trans Canada Highway begins/ends at Signal Hill in St. John's and Beacon Hill Park in Victoria. But looking at this old Newfoundland Provincial Highway map it shows the TCH beginning/ending at the Confederation Building (Provincial Legislature) on Prince Phillip Drive...then following Kenmount Road. (no Outer Ring at that time)

Now the TCH (Outer Ring) ends at Logy Bay Road...north and east of the city:

Here's the end of most easterly Freeway in North America where the 4-lane TCH tapers down to 2 lanes at Exit 50: Logy Bay Road NL30:

Massey Tunnel replacement

https://globalnews.ca/news/8122429/massey-tunnel-replacement-announcement/

The BC government has announced plans for a new 8-lane tunnel to replace the existing Massey Tunnel on Highway 99 under the Fraser River between Richmond and Delta.

Good to see sanity prevail and it end up being widened to 8 lanes. Silly the original plan for a bridge was scrapped, though thankfully they didn’t do the original planned 4 lane replacement tunnel.

^Agreed.
It was nuts to scrap the bridge project after it had started construction back in 2017.

I thought this was a curious statement from the news article:
“Under the new replacement, the province said it does not expect traffic times to change for travellers heading with peak traffic. Where travel times will improve will be those going against peak traffic, it said.

The Urban Toronto site has lots of pics of the Gardiner Expressway demolition (and future partial rebuild) east of downtown Toronto.

I recently drove between Calgary and Victoria. The need for the Trans-Canada Highway to be twinned through the Interior has been well documented, so I was wanted to talk distance signage. Overall, it’s pretty good but I think some improvements that can be made east of Kamloops, especially when compared with other highways in through the province.

Westbound TCH 1
Generally, BC does a pretty good job of signing westbound communities. Kamloops is the control city west of Golden and there are 2-3 towns listed. The only (minor) improvement is that between Revelstoke and Sicamous, there’s inconsistency between Sicamous/Vernon/Kamloops and Salmon Arm/Vernon/Kamloops. There’s room for an argument that Vernon doesn’t need to be listed, but it’s also signed on Hwy 23 south of Revelstoke (the alternate route), so maybe four locations should be listed – Sicamous/Salmon Arm/Vernon/Kamloops. Alberta only lists Canmore/Banff west of Calgary, and there might be a case to have a second sign that lists some major BC destinations, such as at the Hwy 22 junction.

Eastbound TCH 1
I think this could use some work. According to BCMoT’s Manual of Standard Traffic Signs & Pavement Markings (2000), Calgary should be a control city along the Trans Canada Highway east of Kamloops (see page 141 of the pdf); however, it’s not listed at all except for east of Field which is under Parks Canada jurisdiction. Banff is used sporadically east of Kamloops, despite being used as the control city at the Hwy 5 north jct., and consistently east of Revelstoke. Further to that, there’s usually only two locations listed, and the control city is simply the next location. Field, which is used as a control city for westbound traffic within the national parks, is never mentioned – at best it should be listed east of Golden. BC should consider having a minimum of three locations listed on its eastbound signage, with Calgary being the control city. East of Monte Creek, there could even be two signs – Chase/Salmon Arm/Revelstoke and Banff/Calgary. BC uses out of province control cities on other routes, such as Whitehorse on the Alaska Highway and Jasper on the Yellowhead Highways (both 5 & 16), and even uses two Alberta locations where appropriate, such as Grande Prairie/Edmonton on Hwy 2 east of Pouce Coupe and Jasper/Edmonton TCH 16 east of Tete Jaune Cache.

Banff/Yoho (both directions)
This needs its own category. Parks Canada does not sign the locations beyond the national parks well in either direction, especially when compared to TCH 16 in Jasper National Park. They replaced the signage in Banff a few years ago and went with two locations – the next two locations, which is great for tourists but not so great for travellers heading beyond the parks. For example, beyond Banff, it’s Lake Louise/Field, Field/Golden past Lake Louise, and only Golden past Field. Compare that the TCH 16 west of Jasper, which uses Kamloops and Prince George. Parks Canada installed a three-location sign for eastbound traffic at Field, and that standard should be adopted in both directions through the park, with Kamloops and Calgary being the respective control cities. While we’re at it, they could also continue the exit numbers in Banff National Park. Once the Kicking Horse Canyon is completed, that would be a good time to upgrade the signage.

Nice video! I watch your stuff on your YouTube channel all the time.

The new Petitcodiac River Bridge between Moncton and Riverview opened on Friday, much to the relief of the motoring public who had been forced to divert to the Gunningsville Bridge a couple of km to the east, which was severely congested all summer.

This is a replacement for the former causeway structure, unfortunately built in the 1960s, and had been choking the river for the last 50 years, obstructing fish passage, filling the river channel with silt, narrowing the width of the river, and obliterating the tidal bore. This new bridge is a great victory for the environmentalists (and rightfully so).

Here's a video of the new bridge taken the day poor to opening:

^ That new bridge looks like quite an improvement. I found it funny how the bike trail adjacent to the roadway just sort of abruptly ends. I'm sure, however, it will be extended as part of a future project.
