With the years of planning and the train lines already in place I'm not surprised. Will be nice to get another line done in the metro. Hopefully we'll get more, one to the north and northeast. I'd love to see a line extend to Woodbury and further east to Stillwater area. I know that would be big for those of us on the other side of the St. Croix River.

Where do you think a line from there would terminate? I'm assuming Union Depot in St Paul, but not sure. I think a line from Union Depot to the airport is equally as important.

Yes at Union Depot, thus an interconnecting system throughout the metro. Also There is a planned streetcar service that is expected to run from DT St. Paul to the airport.

St. Paul streetcar
Featured snippet from the web
The streetcar would begin at St. Paul's Union Depot and largely run along West Seventh Street in St. Paul on its way to the Mall of America and the airport, sharing some of the same stations with the Green and Blue light rail lines. Streetcars resemble light rail trains but generally move alongside auto traffic.

I really hope they can get the Mille Lacs version built on this site!

MN/WI, I just wanted to say that there are definitely those of us reading your posts and other content on this thread.

I'm going to offer a suggestion that may garner a little more interest. Instead of just posting links to news articles, you may want to try posting photos and renderings or some additional visual content. People are visual creatures and many of us that use this very helpful development overview format from cities they may not be all that familiar with may not take the time to follow every link provided to read a separate news story. The guys (gals?) updating the OKC and SLC threads have this down very well even if the volume of their city's projects are less than what's found in the Twin Cities.

I come here to get the quick and dirty scoop on what's going on with development in other cities I'm interested in. The more readily available the content is, the more apt I am to look into something further if it catches my eye.

Thanks, I'll see if I can learn how to copy and paste pictures. I don't know why it has to be so complicated.

Ryan Cos. has altered its plan for an Edina project, adding eight stories to an apartment building and upping the amount of affordable housing and commercial space.

This possibly makes it 19 stories. This stretch of France is really turning into a a mile or so of high rise condos. Awesome.

What a horribly unattractive building...

We need the RBC building and Eleven to get further out of the ground so we can start showing off some larger towers.

Hoping North Loop Green and Alia get going soon too!

Minneapolis sets new record for construction valuation in 2019 at $2.1 billion: https://www.bizjournals.com/twinciti..._news_headline

Quote:
The construction boom in Minneapolis has reached an all-time high-water mark thanks in large part to a thriving downtown.

The city issued $2.1 billion in building permits for 2019, which is the most it’s ever issued. The total value even surpassed 2014, when the construction of U.S. Bank Stadium pushed the number to $2 billion.
Downtown Minneapolis residential population surpasses 50,000 for first time: http://www.startribune.com/minneapol...000/567805612/

Quote:
More than 51,000 people now live in downtown Minneapolis, according to the latest statistics presented by the Minneapolis Downtown Council during its annual meeting Wednesday.

The region nearly reached the 50,000 mark last year, thanks to residents moving into new apartments cropping up in downtown neighborhoods.

The population has surged in recent years, with 10,400 people moving into the area since 2017, according to the business association. In all, the population has risen 60% since 2006.

The boom is evident in the skyscrapers continually rising downtown. More than half of the $2.1 billion in permits issued in the city came from the wards that encapsulate downtown. Currently, 2,500 rental apartments are under construction.

Cannot possibly overstate how huge of a deal this is!!!

http://www.startribune.com/minneapol...let/568526262/

Quote:
The city of Minneapolis has reached a $9.1 million deal to buy out the lease for the Kmart store on Lake Street, a move that will allow it to accomplish its longtime goal of reopening Nicollet Avenue.

By doing so, the city would remedy what’s widely seen as a massive mistake in planning more than 40 years ago, when it allowed the retailer to build a big-box store that cut off one of Minneapolis’ most storied thoroughfares.
Quote:
The store has blocked the intersection at Nicollet Avenue S. and Lake St. for more than 40 years, and city officials who want to put a streetcar down Nicollet have declared it one of their largest planning obstacles.

The city paid $8 million to buy the land underneath the store in hopes that it would increase their chances of reopening Nicollet. But Kmart’s lease was still scheduled to run through 2053.
Quote:
The deal still needs final approval from City Council, which is expected to come next week, and from Mayor Jacob Frey. That approval is expected to come.

Frey issued a statement calling it “a momentous day for our entire city.” City Council President Lisa Bender, who has made reopening Nicollet Avenue one of her top priorities, said the deal will “provide critical connections for the surrounding neighborhoods and for residents, businesses and visitors throughout the City.”

Thanks for posting that, heard it on NPR today. In retrospect it is horrifying they did this in the first place. I can see merging lots, but why THAT street!!!???

Hope they actually move on it and can get the road reopened - and hope they can do something useful with the freed land.

I won't hold my breath on a street car, though...seems those things take forever or never.

The Bower Residences, Edina (Formerly Promenade Residences)

It appears the 18 story luxury apartment tower under construction at 3650 Hazelton Rd has had a name change. Signage on site indicates the new name is The Bower Residences. Images below taken in the last few days.

All of Edina's highrises are relatively the same height. I wonder if/when they might get something a bit more significant. Even something in the 30 story range.

They seem to be encouraging density around the Southdale area, but at least one high-rise project proposed for France Ave was killed due to opposition from the single family neighbors that would have been in its shadow. The Sun Current article I posted a link to mentions it.

The only other high-rise proposal I’ve heard of is the possible residential tower that would accompany the new Southdale library and a Kowalski’s market on the site of the former Herbergers. That one would be 20-22 stories according to this article:
https://finance-commerce.com/2019/12...ent-southdale/

I’m just glad to see anything taller than the standard cookie-cutter 1+5 stick built on a concrete base apartments going up everywhere. I’m glad for some of those, like Aria at 66th and York that took the place of the long-vacant Best Buy, but it’s gotten pretty boring.
