The old Royal Bank Building is so strange. Like the Sun Life Building, it's a skyscraper -- and a tall one for its day -- that rejects the visual notion of verticality.

It's a bit like the Shell House on the Strand, or something from Shanghai. It's very out of step with the American skyscraper, but still part of that history in its early phase.

If I didn't see your name on the post and if the Royal Bank Tower wasn't in the shot I might have mistaken this for Vancouver.

I never appreciated Vancouver when I lived in Canada, but after a decade surrounded by cities nothing like it, it seems very exotic and cool. Old friend lives there, too -- gotta go back.

If you do come, PM me! I'd love to meet up.

Distant skyline behind the Oakridge Park development

Brentwood and Metrotown skylines in the distance. Surrey's Central City skyline waaaaay in the back.

I'm not entirely sure how much of it was left standing. I think some of the supporting structures of the first two floors were left, but I could be wrong. Whatever wasn't razed will be completely hidden/unrecognizable within the new mall.

It's why I'm trying to find any good excuse to move back..

Can't live in Toronto no more knowing there's Vancouver.
