Those Norquest renderings look great. Since they already own the land, I take it they are undertaking a capital campaign right now for that building?

I suspect that an accelerated one is forthcoming with provincial budget money this spring and it u/c next.

Don't get your hopes up. I work in post-secondary, and all you have to do is watch the news to see the impacts of the federal government capping the number of international students coming into Canada. Already several post-secondary institutions in Canada are cutting programs and hundreds of staff members. Seneca Polytechnic in Markham Ontario has shut down an entire campus.

It takes 3 domestic students to recoup the tuition losses of one international student. My institution has 2 new buildings in the works, and both are currently being re-evaluated. We have already been told that the next academic year will most likely be ok. However, we are expecting major cutbacks for 2026-27.

A few developers are against the City zoning bylaw updates to parking lots Downtown, surprise surprise.

Make them pave, light and landscape them and not allow them to operate in perpetuity - end of story.

Although not in Edmonton this proposed data center will have a great effect on this city in terms of training and resources should it move forward. City political and business leaders should be involved in getting as much business as possible from this proposal as it moves along or we will be taking a back seat to our neighbors to the south.

Born and raised in Edmonton, studied software engineering at the UofA but have moved down south to work on AI in San Francisco.

Seems like a good project, Canada pretty much has no good cloud providers, everyone uses American providers (AWS, Azure) whose data centers are pretty much all in the US. However, despite the pitch, the local impact from this project will be limited to energy infrastructure development and some very modest incremental tax revenue for AB. Just like how we kick off all our jobs at data centers in middle-of-nowhere Kansas where land and energy is cheap the same thing is happening here. Data centers are not a jobs magnet for high-skill labor, never have been. It offers no competitive advantage to the vast majority of industry to have your jobs kick off in 40ms vs 300ms. I wouldn't even say this is a competitive advantage to Canada since most companies already have access to the same capabilities already.

You want my thoughts? It's a barrel of snake oil that is being pitched by Canada's version of Donald Trump. It's located out in the middle of nowhere, and I won't even delve into the logistics of housing, transportation and energy. It's being championed by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and her UCP clown show - nuff said.

Putting aside politics/personalities for the moment and looking at the economics.

If this actually gets built I would rather Edmonton be at the front of the line then the back with regards to reaping any benefits.
