If you listen carefully, the male said "White River", indicating that this was Highway 17 along Lake Superior Shore. Perhaps this is why one doesn't want trucks to be there.

I guess this is the sort of thing that has happened on Highway 11 south of Temagami?

Also any idea why the planning of a 4-lane divided freeway was done all the way to Nipissing/Renfrew boundary instead of stopping short outside of Mattawa? That’s an extra 10+ km. Is it still because of potential mining issue in the future?

I’m asking because it really gives the impression that MTO has long-term (50-year) plan to extend 417 to North Bay or even SSM.

There are definite plans for a bypass around Mattawa. I doubt it will happen under the Ford government. I don't know anything about mining there.

The MTO doesn't really have any planning for most of hwy 17. Just for the busier sections, areas close to cities and bypasses.

Here’s the thing though: AADT on 17 between Mattawa and Deep River isn’t that high, so I find it surprising that planning’s been done to the boundary of the county and the district.

I have not been on the 11, but I heard it is a flat and used by trucks. Here's what I think:

HWY 17:
Arnprior - Mattawa: 4 Lanes
Mattawa - North Bay: 2+1 Lanes
North Bay - SSM: 4 Lanes
SSM - Wawa: 2+1 Lanes
Wawa- Thunder Bay: As-Is
Thunder Bay - Manitoba: 4 Lanes

HWY 11:
North Bay - New Liskeard: 2+1 Lanes
New Liskeard - Timmins: 4 Lanes
Timmins - Hearst: 2+1 Lanes
Heast - Nipigon: 4 Lanes

Does it mean that, if/when MTO decides to twin 11 between Hearst and Cochrane, it needs to build the freeway on a brand new alignment even when there are no towns to bypass?

No, but it means that one direction will be 3 lanes instead of 2. Bonus or not?

Here’s the thing:
Between smooth rock falls and Hearst, the Ontario Northland rail abuts Highway 11.

Obviously we need to bypass the built up areas. In fact, because of that, the simplest way to twin 11 for those 200 km is to do it on a completely new alignment and convert the existing highway to a service road that’s also pedestrian and cyclist friendly.

I’ve also considered the option of having the new eastbound lanes south of the tracks with enough room for double tracking (just in case). This will force total grade-separation as well. But, when a freeway like this approaches a town, it’ll be a hassle to fly lanes over the tracks.

Errmmm, that last one is an OK idea but I think the idea to build the highway next to a railroad is stupid. A bridge is pretty expensive but maybe the other alignment can be built to the other side that is not abutted by the ONR. Also, a Mattawa bypass could be useful, freeway or not. The roundabout is really confusing.

OK, let's discuss this a bit:

Quote:
With an additional 500 to 750 transport trucks headed west on the Expressway each day each truck will now encounter three extra sets of traffic lights.
No they will not. After the offramp of 102, they hit three sets of lights: Strand, East, and Hilldale. If they go to the Shabaqua Highway, they will also his three sets of lights: Dawson, John, and Oliver. Then take their off-ramp, and continue all the way to Dryden before they see another traffic light.

Quote:
According to Ontario Roads magazine it takes an eighteen wheeler that weighs 80,000 pounds approximately 120 feet of travel before the driver will react to a yellow, followed by red light and an additional 390 feet to stop once the brakes are applied at 90 kilometres an hour in perfect road conditions.
Spacing between lights:

Off-ramp at Dawson Road to Strand: Approximately 300 feet from the common point where traffic merges, although the offramp itself blends into a right turn lane, so it never actually "ends".

Strand to East: 880 feet. Assuming the light at Strand is green and the truck passes through it, that truck has about 1,180 feet to stop now.

East to Hilldale: 780 feet. This is 1,660 feet from Strand and 1,960 feet from the expressway off-ramp.

Now how does the Thunder Bay Expressway fare:

Dawson to John: 3,850 feet

John to Oliver: 10,460 feet, or 14,316 feet if Dawson is green.

I can't continue this because after this point, the transport will not encounter another traffic light until Dryden.

Conclusion: The trucks should not be on Dawson Road, because they don't have enough stopping distance.

Quote:
The distance from Red River Road traveling south to the intersection of the Harbour Expressway extension and heading west through Kakabeka, Ontario to Sistones Corners is 48 kilometres.

Add in the additional three sets of traffic lights at Red River Road, John Street and Oliver Road intersections and you have just created very dangerous hazards.
Let's rephrase the second sentence!!

Quote:
Add in the additional three sets of traffic lights at Strand Avenue, East Avenue and Hilldale Road intersections and you have just created very dangerous hazards.
Wow, what an excellent fucking point!

Quote:
Now you want to add an extra 30 minutes to the truck driver’s day. You are also adding extra carbon monoxide emissions and brake pad dust to the environment.
30 extra minutes?

Quote:
The distance from the Red River Road intersection and Thunder Bay Expressway turning west onto Red River Road and traveling up Dawson Road to the intersection of Highway 11/17 and Dawson Road is 32 kilometres.

The distance from Red River Road traveling south to the intersection of the Harbour Expressway extension and heading west through Kakabeka, Ontario to Sistones Corners is 48 kilometres.
48 - 32 = 16

16 km in 30 minutes = 32 km / h

They are travelling 32 km/h?

Also, brake pad dust? Have they driven Dawson Road? It's undulating hills. And yes, the trucking industry, which gives no fucks about global warming, is suddenly worried about a 1% increase in their emissions due to this 16km detour.

Quote:
If council votes again in February with the same result of a designated truck route, a flashing yellow light will have to be installed at all three intersection of Red River Road, John Street and Oliver Road indicating that when flashing that the traffic lights are about to change to yellow followed by red.

This would be the same as the yellow flashing light in the westbound lane at the Balsam Street and Thunder Bay Expressway.

Traffic lights will also have to be installed at the intersections of Highway 11/17 and Mapleward Road, Highway 130, Vibert Road, Highway 580 and in Kakabeka.
Why would additional traffic lights have to be added? 1 extra vehicle every 2 minutes warrants traffic lights? Kakabeka Fall's seeing an increase in traffic from 10,500 vehicles to 11,000 vehicles warrants traffic lights? Does it really?

Quote:
There are a great deal more schools in the Oliver-Paipoonge area than in Lappe.
Too bad Lappe isn't anywhere near Dawson Road because then he'd have a point. Fuck Five Mile School and the 300 kids going there, we need to protect the 95 kids at Kakabeka Falls school from the trucks that already pass by the school about which we give no fucks!

Quote:
Are these trucks carrying sand, gravel and concrete expected to travel down Dog Lake Road to Dawson Road, make a right and head west to Sistonens Corner, then east back to Thunder Bay to make a delivery on Red River Road. Ridicules question I know, but so is your designated truck route.
Ridicules question indeed. I'm ridiculing it now. A local delivery would originate and terminate at the closest point to which the origin facility has access, which would allow a concrete truck to travel down Dawson Road to access Red River Road.

Do these people not proof read before setting in letters?

Great line-by-line analysis.

Except, AADT of 10K~11K through K Falls? I thought it's only 4.5K...

The road is the only link between Eastern and Western Canada, dramatically highlighted by the Nipigon Bridge damage and detour (Only through SSM Chicago Duluth and Thunder Bay). Another faster link would be beneficial to Canada, especially as the population continues to rise. The road's economic benefits would outweigh the negatives, especially if we are given a further bypass of Thunder Bay. It would not have traffics lights (or very little)

At this point I’m just hoping that 417 extension to Renfrew will proceed even if the government changes hand. Just like anyone else, I don’t hold my breath until shovels are on the ground.

I hope that explains why I’ve been quiet in this thread lately. If anything, I’ve diverted my attention to Route 185 twinning in Québec lately.

Yeah, I guess the Highway needs some sort of upgrade, to me hopefully in the form of a freeway bypass north and west of Thunder Bay
