Laura Morrison was the one who voted against it. Surprise. It would raise property taxes from $100k to $1.5 million. And she thinks that is a bad thing.

Also that is good that they will finish those bike lanes.

A planned apartment or office high-rise near the Spring and Monarch condominium buildings won zoning approval Thursday.

Austin City Council members gave the green light to the project on West Bowie Street between Third and Fourth Streets after a marathon meeting that lasted near midnight. Members voted 6-1 in favor of increasing height limits from 120 feet to 400 feet, or from about 10 to 35 stories.

Citing a challenged economy where banks have been notoriously tight fist, most council members agreed now is not the time to discourage high-density development downtown. That said, the Endeavor Real Estate and Perry Lorenz project is still in the early planning stages.

Jamil Alam of Cerco Development, a division of Endeavor, presented the project during the council meeting. He said developers will complete existing bike trails around the proposed development and assure construction complies with parkland and the great streets program.

This rendering shows the downtown hotel planned by Manchester Financial Group. It would include 115,000 square feet of meeting and exhibit space, plus two restaurants and retail space.

A San Diego hotel developer plans to build a $350 million hotel with more than 50 stories and 1,035 rooms east of the Austin Convention Center. The hotel would be built on land now used for parking at the northeast corner of Red River and Cesar Chavez streets, near Waller Creek.

Manchester Texas Financial Group could find itself in competition with White Lodging Services Corp., which plans a 1,003-room Marriott Marquis hotel on Congress Avenue between Second and Third streets.

It's unclear whether Austin could support two more convention-size hotels, in addition to the 800-room Hilton Austin, so the developers could be in a race to see who can break ground first.

I'm just gonna go ahead and say it.... if all of these buildings get built Austin will truly have one of the most beautiful American skylines.

I want them all to get built, 21c, this one, 7rio, T. Stacey, the Marriot and that one and this one and that one and this and that too, yadda yadda. man, this would put Austin on the map! period. no buts or whatnots. Waller creek, the urban rail.... ughhh so much stuff going on!

The thing is, Austin may not be able to support that much new stock coming into the market all at once.

That hotel is absolutely genius.

I have to admit I would have never thought of it and I live here and think of all kinds of crazy stuff. Rainey Street is going to be amazing. Ms. Dunlap has gotta be thrilled about this!

But think about it. That hotel right which will be finished right bout the time Waller Creek is finished, and it is right across the creek from the convention center. Just down the creek (cooler walk in summer) from 6th. Just up the creek from the new boathouse. And on the north end of Rainey Street. It is the perfect location. I honestly think that location is even be better for a hotel of that size than 2nd and Congress. It is ideal.

Austin is going to start bringing in some major conferences once that hotel is done. I mean big time type conferences. It is such a great idea.

Edit: So what will happen to the parking lot between this hotel and Rainey Street? lol. Perhaps a tiny retail mall or something?

Don't forget F1. I know the news is gonna slow down at some point, but at the rate it has been going who knows what is next?

Where is this huge recession they keep talking about on FOX News that is supposed to be only getting worse? lol.

Well, things aren't really getting better in the Midwest (in some ways they are getting worse there).

This proposal looks stunning, especially compared to White Lodge's proposed design. To think, just a few hours ago I was excited about the Marriot project. now I agree with wwmiv, f the Marriot. In addition to the much needed extra rooms, the new proposal will be a major catalyst for the Waller Creek revitalization plans. A 50 story, 1000 room hotel in Austin, who could have imagined that?! Two 50 + story buildings in Austin, who would have thunk that 10 years ago?! Turn the Marriot site into an open space plaza with sculptures, water features, trees, gardens, gathering space, ect...
