Saint John cannot keep relying on blue collar work to grow the economy. Blue collar work always leads to boom and bust.

This is not radical thinking but common sense— tidal power research. Saint John is lucky to have the Bay of Fundy and should take full advantage of it.

This is the true meaning of inovation.

Has anyone else heard that the Halifax shipbuilding contract is too large for the single single shipyard and that JDI will open up the Saint John Drydock to lessen the load on Halifax Shipyard?

It isn't happening. The shipbuilding infrastructure has been removed other than the dock, not to mention that the existing buildings have been replaced with new industry.

I'm aware of the changes that have been made since the dismantling. But given the size of the contract— to get it up and running could be pennies.

I can guarantee, that they won't be reopening the drydock and also will agree with you on the fact that the pipeline will not fix anything and won't bring in as much as people hope job wise... I know this because I work for the Irving's and deal with these conversations everyday on the phone, the drydock is not feasible. I won't mention what I know about the pipeline, but lets just say people won't be disappointed but won't be pleased either. Just wait for the stories to come out.

The pipeline will be a significant source of jobs with or without a second refinery. But this only tightens the stranglehold Irving has on the city. Not sure if we could expect anything else in this backwards and regressive province.

The Irving oligopoly in NB is somewhat disconcerting, but I dare say that the province would be much more backwards and regressive without them (and the McCains).

Well, yes, because as it stands all we have are Irving companies. So without them, now, yes it would put an enormous dent in our economy. But this is only true because how far we have let them dominate our province with little diversity. Prior to the Irvings the province was doing much better than it has since. You can't have one company dictate the growth of a province.

A lot of people either love or hate the Irvings. For me, it's more of a very frustrated respect. This is because they wield a great deal of power and influence, and while they have done a lot of good things (e.g. Centerbeam Place), at the same time they've often taken actions with vehemently anti-urban consequences that are hurting SJ.

To name just 3 examples:
-The creation and perpetuation of vacant lots in the Uptown. All the parking lots on the Imperial Theatre block are Irving-owned (either JDI or Cobalt Properties), as is basically every empty lot along Elliott Row (many of which were created when JDI acquired and demolished the buildings on those lots), as just two fairly egregious examples.
-The recent demolition of two heritage mansions along Mount Pleasant Avenue, so there would be a larger undeveloped buffer around their own estate.
-Editorials and media coverage in the Telegraph-Journal that appeal to demeaning and demoralizing negativity far more often than they employ respectful and constructive criticism.

I don't wish to single out the Irvings on this: most powerful entities in NB, public and private, do things all the time without any thought about its impact on our urban fabric. Moosehead has been aggressively acquiring land and residential properties in the neighbourhoods around Main Street West, casting a shadow over this area's future potential. And I'm not even gonna get started about our provincial government, or the Port for that matter. This is why it's so frustrating to be an urbanist here: almost everyone, whether it's their intention or not, is working against us.

Not to mention that it is hard to be an urbanist when there isn't really a true urban area in the province other than uptown SJ and maybe downtown Fton

My parents who live near the Irving's on Mount Pleasant claim one of the Irving grandson is building on the property beside the park (Charlie Denton's former house). Mr Denton was owner of Charlie's Chicken in Brunswick Square years ago where the tunnel to City Market now is.

He was also a city councillor...

I noticed the other day, the house was gone. I was surprised to see it gone, since it was a really nice house.
