There are acts that have no trouble filling an 18,000 seat arena and because of that require bigger venues to maximise revenue.
Personally, I hate concerts in arenas... whether it's 18k or 10k... I prefer a 2k-3k seat concert hall instead. The more intimate the better.

What's happening in Calgary is ridiculous. If King is threatening to move the Flames, then the City should say "FU, negotiations are over; we're not giving you a cent."

This kind of extortion, like the one we saw in Pittsburgh a decade ago, is unacceptable. End of the day, the Flames owners stand to lose more than Calgary if they end up moving the team.

That is really the bottom line here, and that's why the extortion game probably won't work there.

Sports teams are not really big moneymakers for cities. For the most part they are just a way for people to spend entertainment dollars they would have had anyway, and spent as efficiently within the region. Large public subsidies can easily outweigh whatever economic advantages a city like Calgary would enjoy from attracting people to come visit for hockey games.

I'd be happy if pro sports were cut off from public spending all over North America and readjusted to become a much more modest industry (where the best players are paid in the hundreds of thousands per year rather than the tens of millions, and tickets cost tens of dollars instead of hundreds). Little of value would be lost; there would still be people obsessed with both playing and watching hockey.

Well of course, that's how the racket works. The newer ones are always built to put the old ones to shame, giving the other owners the case they need to have new ones built for them.
