While not a huge project, construction on the 25-story "yoo" building should start anytime in the next month. Although, I agree with you, a number of these "newly announced" projects are pipe dreams. They just announce them to build interest and get publicity, without financing it is nothing more than free advertisement for the development companies..

Why are people so quick to discount the Spring St student tower? It is a private sector apartment tower and, to me, every bit as legit as Skyhouse or 77 12th.

Honestly my worry is that a lot of these mediocre projects we hear announced, like the one on Howell Mill at Collier, are going to flood the market and make actual good development uneconomic. Also, I'm quite skeptical of anything primarily residential that's more than ~30 floors. To have an actual boom, we need some new office towers, and right now market dynamics just don't support that.

I have doubts about this 14th St. Arts Center deal. Arquitectonica is a name firm, but they have a bit of history with unfulfilled announced projects in Atlanta.

That's just ridiculous. Many other reputable firms have also been involved in proposals that never happened.

The Related Company, the developer of the proposed CityPlace is also very reputable. Neither firm can be blamed for bad timing. The bottom fell out of the market right as they were launching that project.

The problem is the scale, which is huge for Atlanta or any city. Let's hope they pull it off.

Isn't the Related group doing that apartment tower on the back side of Lenox?

Quite good news for downtown, did we missed that ?

The plan is to tear down an aging parking deck east of the Capitol building and turn it into a plaza large enough to accommodate up to 4,500. Design work will begin immediately, with demolition scheduled to begin in January. The project is due to be completed by the end of next year.

Anyone on here been around long enough to remember the proposal to create a park all the way from the Capital building to Oakland cemetery? When I heard about the new plaza, the whole plan came back to my memory. Wonder if some day they will find the money to cap that portion of the connector and create that park.

I'm pretty sure that's still the plan. Almost all the lots required to get that done are already owned by either the city or the state.

Isn't the "original" version of 50 Allen Plaza dead completely? I haven't given that building much thought after the first announcement that it wasn't going to happen, so I don't know what's the latest on it.

Yes Sharkey, the original plan is dead and gone.

However, there is a new owner and new investment is going on in the neighborhood on adjacent blocks. It is a very prime location, and something will eventually happen there. At this point though, everything is very speculative.

I have heard of this before but I do hope they stick to their long-range plans to have the plaza reach across the connector and deck it over. That would be so spectacular for the area and do much towards sewing up the wound that the freeway cuts through Downtown Atlanta.

I totally agree. Considering the departure of the Braves, one would think that the city as well as the state would be bullish on such a project. It would definitely make the Ted's acreage more attractive to potential developers.
