I certainly agree with you there. And frankly, I'm a little surprised that it hasn't happened yet... you would think that whatever MLSE could extort from a prospective Hamilton team owner in various fees would be worth more than the marginal number of ticket sales and TV viewers they'd stand to lose in the Hamilton/Niagara area. But no one seems to be willing or able to pull it off.

I'm sure it'll happen at some point, but the issue here is will it happen soon enough to justify spending the cash on a massive arena makeover right now? I would say not. By the time a franchise lands in Hamilton, it could be 15 years after the renovations at which point Hamilton is back to square one. Why not just wait until there is an actual need for a NHL arena before building one?

I know the following project is not technically in Canada, but it's home to a sports team that is of interest to many Canadians, and, let's face it, being situated on the border as it is, Detroit is practically an honorary Canadian city anyway.

I guess people are missing the main point of the article:

It was just studied to see what it would cost and based on that to see if it's worth it. And it's been deemed not worthy of the money - which makes sense.
Hamiltonians are not under the illusion that we'll be getting an NHL team anytime soon - if ever. That ship has sailed a long time ago. And regardless of any issues with the Sabres and Leafs, there's no one trying to bring a team here anyway - so it's all a moot point.

Well Ken King has raised the ante, build the Flames an arena or they'll just move - link. Most likely this will be a prominent issue what with the upcoming municipal election, good timing Ken.

That is... the saddest attempt of an owner at trying to get their way that I've ever seen. It's like a high school ex trying to get you to take them back.

There's no way the NHL would let them move.

Sure there is. For enough cash as a "relocation" fee, the Flames could be in Quebec City quicker than you can say Bonhomme Carnaval.

So the NHL is playing the NFL game now? I guess they always have with the Jets/Coyotes, Nords/Avs and Whalers/Hurricanes, but besides the Avs the others (including Atlanta and the Florida teams) have turned out to create more problems for Bettman and crew.

I say f'em and move if King and crew is that convinced the grass is greener somewhere else (but then I'm a CFL fan first and the NHL is a very distant 2nd). If I lived in Calgary and was a taxpayer I would be more amicable if the Flames group stepped up with more than 50% of the costs.

The problem with King's stance is that Calgary is such a lucrative market that you know that if they left today, then some US team would be announcing its move to Calgary tomorrow.

The "build us an arena or we're going to move" bluff works in smaller cities that are less secure about their chances of getting a replacement team, but I don't think anyone would really take it seriously with respect to Calgary.

Absolutely no chance. The NHL won't burn bridges in one of their most lucrative markets just to move a team to Quebec City. If it was just a matter of offering enough money, the Coyotes or Hurricanes would already have relocated.

The NHL won't leave Calgary. They'll make a huge stink and claim that they will, but it's all to try and get their way. When push comes to shove, they won't leave because aside moving to Toronto there isn't a single market left where they can make as much money as they do/can in Calgary.

In the next few years Copps in Hamilton will need a significant renovation. With that said being a 17,000 seat arena when that reno happens makes no sense. Scale it down to 10,500 seats suitable for AHL or OHL, with suites and better concessions and have it similar to the Budweiser Gardens in London that opened a few years back. This way Hamilton doesn't lose out on concerts, Memorial Cups, and the Briers and Scotties curling tournaments.

Scaling it down to 10,500 seats will most definitely cause them to lose out on concerts. Many acts require larger venues to play.

Speaking from the last three concerts I went to in Saskatoon and Regina, the band only chooses to play in large venues, and then they get half of the venue full making the experience worse than if they chose to play in the smaller venue.

I thought everybody from Sask would drive a full day just to see any event going on in the province?
