Casa Latina is not dead!!!

They posted an update on Facebook today. Apparently there was a delay in permitting with the city (I don't know why), but, that apparently has been sorted, and they plan on starting renovations for their new Main Street restaurant immediately.

We want to thank everyone who has been patiently waiting and keeping up with updates about our next location at 761 Main St, Moncton.

Today, after months of waiting and working back and forth with the city to obtain our building permit, we’re excited to say it has finally been approved!
We’re not wasting a second — construction starts tomorrow.

We can’t give you an exact opening date yet, but it looks like summer will hit different this year ������

Moncton elementary school to be replaced with new building

The new building will be built on the site of the existing school with a capacity of about 643 K-5 students at an estimated cost of $50.1 million.

“The design process is starting soon. As it progresses, we will be able to confirm the schedule,” said McConnell. “Preliminary expectations indicate that construction will begin next year (2027) and that the school will open its doors in 2029 or 2030.”

I am aware of a rumour that this space will soon be home to yet another south Asian restaurant. I've lost count how many of those there are on Main Street right now.

The new restaurant will be Shawarma Kingdom.

Opening soon. Probably the same owners, just pivoting after a failed concept.

This project (20 Cameron St), originally from 2024, appeared in Moncton Live today under the Redevelopment Grant Program. It is slated to begin this spring, will be wood-framed construction, and is expected to be completed by 2028.



I find it interesting that the old Pac PDF has Ashford Properties written as the client…

This may be in trouble.

They had a public presentation at city council today before planned second and third readings of the order approving the development.

The enraged neighbours mounted a spirited defence siting the loss of a treed buffer at the back of their properties, and the fact that at six storeys, this building is three storeys taller than what is currently allowed based on current zoning. They even had Councillor Bourgeois waxing on about his concerns over the woodland creatures that would be displaced by this development.

In the end, council voted to delay approval until the next meeting while options were explored to see if it was financially feasible to decrease the height of the building to four storeys, and to add underground parking in order to keep a part of the treed buffer.

The demands of the enraged citizenry will likely make this development uneconomic. I am worried that the plans will be shelved.

Regarding this, Councilor Dave Steeves just posted this on his election Facebook page:

Notable projects include a $43.4-million building permit for one of the 17-story towers at 200 Assomption Boulevard and a $10-million permit for the five-story apartment building at 45 Lewis Street. Both downtown projects are among the city’s three largest residential developments this quarter. Another major project is a $17.4-million permit for a six-storey apartment building at 24 Grand Trunk Street.

So, the project on Lewis Street may be more substantial than the "affordable housing" townhome initiative mentioned further up the page.

A five story building in this location will fill a bit of a hole in the skyline, and given the downtown location, would be a more appropriate use for the land.

Dave Steeves on Facebook made a post about the building permits this year, and this was included: "$10-Million permit for the five-story apartment building at 45 Lewis Street."

Slowly but surely the vacant land downtown is being developed. But there's still a lot of vacant and underdeveloped land in the core.

The Ashford development was supposed to be a game changer for the city, but who knows what's going on with them.

The hole has been filled, and the demolition fencing at 162 Queen St was removed this week. I think they are aiming to start construction in early July.
