That was the city's main post office and customs house, built in the 1860's or so. A few decades later a new customs house was built next door:

Source

It is a nice building but I think it's been diminished a bit by renos over the years. It was built on a tall foundation but then a platform/plaza was built. It also had a bunch of rooftop detailing and a cupola that was removed in the 1950's. I wonder if some of that could ever be rebuilt.

I've lost the original source for this and would like to find a better quality version but this one shows the old post office in the lower right. The perspective is somewhat similar to that third picture above, but higher up.

Some ocean theme shots from Victoria today, the first few from Paul Roux on Flickr taken of the Canadian and other navies off the coast of Victoria or at the naval base.

HMCS Nanaimo

Some of the US mountains as viewed from Victoria are really jagged!

SDEVictoriaPhotos

Victoria has no rivers of any significance, but it is does have the Gorge Waterway, which is a 6 km long narrow arm of the ocean that's connected to the inner harbour, and the tidal flow causes the water to reverse course.

Great photos Zoomer. I envy the navy photos. I've for a long time wished I could photograph the base and war ships. The last photo really shows how large Victoria has gotten. A really great photo... thanks for sharing these tonight.

I spent about four hours today walking around Victoria taking photos. I took over a hundred photos today. I uploaded just over ten tonight and thought I would share them here. I find that every time I go downtown to take photos, I always find new things to photograph. I was really needing to do paperwork for my business today but I decided to take the day off instead.

Nice Victoria shots.

The USS Zumwalt is super cool, the first class of ships outfitted with ports for the installation of electric weapons like railguns and electron laser cannons.

Victoria looks so much better at ground level than larger London (Ont.). It isn't even fair.

The crab apple blossoms are so dang beautiful. I love the Victoria Promenade in Edmonton. I wish the rich cunts in Calgary's Crescent Heights didn't have so much influence. Without them, our valley top (the one overlooking the Bow River and downtown) would have a nice public realm treatment like that.

At ground level it looks better than practically every Canadian city imo.

I find Victoria a really nice walkable city. So many of the surface parking lots have been developed over the last 10 years too. For a small city it's also pretty dense. Thanks for everyone's feedback on my photos. I uploaded a few more tonight and thought I'd share them on here again.

Nice photos Mr. Scaper.

Here in Gatineau, it's the season of street sweepers that can't sweep the street because people park on the street and can't park anywhere else to make the streets look lovely season.

Thanks for sharing GS! Yes Harls, Victoria is lucky the streets and sidewalks don't take the winter beating like a lot of cities. Also, despite the controversy over all the bike lanes, street calming and lane reductions downtown, it has made for a great pedestrian experience. Public realm investments continue to be made and as much as some locals complain about it becoming a 'big city', it has actually improved in terms of being well rounded with fewer missing teeth and looking even more polished than ever. Just check out those videos clips on the video thread.

Site remediation is nearly complete at the Booth Street Complex in Ottawa, future home to a 'Distillery District Like' multi use neighbourhood.

I'm not sure what mountains these are. I've never seen them before and I've lived in Victoria my whole life. I found that photo to be amazing. Zoomer might know what they are.

I also uploaded some more of my Victoria photos that I took earlier this week, tonight onto Flickr. I thought I'd share them on here as well.

gorgeous Montreal pics as always, thanks for sharing Martin Mtl. I love the variety of heights, materials and eras, makes for such a rich tapestry. Having 6, 18, 27 and 40 storey buildings all jumbled together really works well.

And GS you've been busy! Love the picture of the Juliet with the random windows popped open.

Ok, now to answer the question about the mountains, the answer is in this Vibrant Victoria post - those are the Three Fingers Mountains in Washington State. Only visible from certain angles and clear days, and the jagged details only visible with a huge zoom lens.

Mount Baker is always visible on clear days, and in this zoomed in pic I believe the Three Fingers are to the right?

source Heather K Jones - Flickr

The closest mountains are just across the straight, the Olympics, also in Washington State - view from Victoria below:
