Holy Shot. Can you imagine if that building was lost. I sure hope it can be saved, and the business resurrected. At minimum the building. What a loss that would be.

It is one of the nicest on that block, restrained yet charming with character.
Built in 1882, The T.W. Taylor Building, is one of the oldest extant structures in the "Downtown" area. Top 5 from my estimations.
Winnipeg Hotel (Garry Saloon) 1873, Woodbine Hotel 1878, Fortune Block 1882, MacDOnald Block 1883, Oddfellow's Hall on Princess St 1884.
I did this from memory so there could be an omission I forgot.
Losing this would give us more missing teeth in a cohesive streetscape.
I feel it was a pyromaniac and if so, time for Harsh Prison sentences, boot camp.
With no fear or punishment, It's time to get tough on crime.

Canada's criminal code with regards to arson (in this case, deliberate damage to property, not accidental):

434 Every person who intentionally or recklessly causes damage by fire or explosion to property that is not wholly owned by that person is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding fourteen years.

Source: https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/c-46/page-60.html

We don't yet know who or what caused the fire. if it was deliberate the arsonist(s) could get up to 14 years in prison, though I guess that depends on how successful their defence lawyer's appeals to the judge for leniency might be.

14 years sounds pretty harsh to me. I think it's pretty early to start dumping on how weak the justice system is, or assume there is "no fear or punishment" .

If it's these fuckers that are going around extorting these restaurants (Thida's Thai, Commonwealth and these other mom and pop shops on Main and Selkirk)...see you in 14 years.

14 years is not harsh. In countries such as the UK, Germany and Australia, the max penalty for arson is life.

That I would agree with. Minimum 14 years.

They would have to catch the guys first. Another $19 million / 5.9% increase for WPS this year and as usual it has had absolutely no effect on cleaning up crime. Almost as if this isn't the right way to use our resources.....

The fire department needs that money way more than the police. Imagine if we funded transit with that money?

Here's hoping for either a second location or a relocation from a crappy suburban strip mall!

I would actually take a Denny's in the Village.

Hint. It's a popular suburban restaurant.

I wonder if it is something from the owner of 4 Crowns on Mc Phillips. Ravi Ramberran has been on a bit of an expansion mode over the last year or so.

Or is it going to be a new Salisbury House.

^ Based on TV's initial comment, it doesn't sound like a chain like any of those.

Some of these aren't very 'suburban' but I'd take another Bonfire Bistro, Silver Heights, Bellisimo, Maxime's, In Ferno's, Brazen Hall or Nicolino's in OV...that's a pretty big space for some of them though.

It would be so cool to have a brewery in the village. Something like Nonsuch, Brazen Hall or Kilter.
