Not sure how I feel about that Regent Street Hotel rendering. I'm glad it seems to be back on, I just really liked the old design a lot.

Just saw this on twitter and was wondering if anyone else has seen this. The streets looked way more packed with people then, but why?
Have you ever read up on the auto industry streetcar conspiracy? Almost every big city had substantial street car lines in the 1940s when these photos we're taken. That of course meant cities we're more vibrant since everyone wasn't in their cars.

Has there been any news on when Moda Luxe may be getting going? I thought I heard it was delayed until 2022, but can't find any additional information. I hope that's one that still gets built.

Agreed. The new design is cool, but it's too much like the Kensington Tower. The brick and detailing of the previous design added some nice quality and would give some nice contrast to Kensington.

Does anyone know what's going on on the southwest corner of 1st Avenue and A street? It's a large lot. Google Earth shows it all demoe'd and fenced off.

That had until fairly recently old garages which went with the Covey apartments on South Temple and A. County Assessor map shows still owned by Covey. It is a steep piece of land.

Top ten cities

You all should check out some of the latest Youtuber videos that rank the top ten cities. Salt Lake City is typically in the top 5 of these videos, and usually beating out Denver. Some of the rankings are top ten State Capitol Cities, Top Ten mid-sized or small cities (these definitions vary depending on the Youtuber. Denver is typically not in the same category because it's larger metro population, except when comparing state capitol cities). In one video, Salt Lake City was ranked as the #1 city in the U.S. not just because of its thriving tech economy, but it's becoming more fun with new hipster bars & cafes. Also, if you check out videos ranking the top ten states, Utah is usually in the top 5.

I don't know anything about construction. With temperatures staying in the 30s for awhile, will they be able to make as much progress with the concrete work at Liberty Sky and CCH?

I've done a lot of that this past year and Salt Lake City is definitely well represented. Another plum for Utah, in general, is the most beautiful States list. Seems like Utah is always in the top 3 or 4.

They will be able to proceed with construction at the current temps. The snow may slow them down a little bit but not much.

I’m sure there are plenty of delays due to materials and shipping. I would be curious to see how these large projects are struggling to stay on track due to all sorts of delays with materials, and possibly some labor difficulties due to Covid. though I’m sure that’s not too restrictive until the building gets all closed up. I’m sure it varies widely from project to project but I bet there are some pretty big bottle necks while the projects waits for something to get done or delivered causing all sorts of scheduling problems and a domino effect.

I can't stand listening to all the boring commentary on these videos, luckily there's enough others like me who just drops the list in the comments section and I can skip around to the cities I want to see if of interest.

The World's Best Cities report was recently released, and it was cool to see both my hometown (SLC at #29) and my new home (PHX at #13) on the list of America's top 100 best cities. Both cities received high marks for outdoors access and Salt Lake was called out for it's investment in downtown and cool factor. I'll toast to that!

That is an interesting list. They rank SLC #27 in Parks and Recreation. It feels like we should rank higher than that.

Provo and Ogden rank 24 and 57 on that list respectively.

I was curious as well, they quantified this based on Trip Advisor recommended activities. "Parks & Outdoors Number of quality parks and outdoor activities recommended by locals and visitors (TripAdvisor.com)"

I was hoping the full report would provide the cities ranking for every category but it doesn't, it only rolls them up at the major category levels they use. Parks and outdoors rolls the Place category.

I don't know anything about Provo but hard to believe SLC is 62 in Place while Provo is 7. Could it have something to do with actual developed city parks like Liberty Park as opposed to the canyons which I guess are really national forest?

Place, Product, Programming, People, Prosperity, and Promotion.
SLC: 62, 27, 49, 31, 9 and 52
Provo: 7, 83, 101, 30, 1, 101
PHX: 11, 9, 15, 43, 16, 20

29th is definitely not a boost for SLC. Those videos give SLC a much better ranking. But, maybe because it's ranked within certain groupings, like best small to mid-sized cities, and best state capitol cities.

I was going to Harmon’s and noticed that the underpass over to City Creek Center had reopened, so I decided to check it out...

Does anyone know what the point of tearing down the old entrance building and putting that thing there was? It’s actually really lame compared to the old one. The old one had cool historical stuff to look at. The new one is just a boring escalator with nothing to look at and less natural light. They also narrowed the tunnel under state street for some reason and it now looks even more boring and generic than it did before.

They probably should have just updated the glass and put some new tile in the old setup. It would have looked nicer and cost a lot less. I can’t remember if the old setup had an elevator. If not perhaps that’s why they did it. But I’m sure they could have added something to the existing building.

Yeah, the old Social Hall Museum was pretty neat. I took my little kiddos to see the new version on Saturday, and they were so disappointed that there was only the one set of escalators instead of the two the old version had
But it isn't quite fair to compare the two yet, because it clearly isn't finished. The ceiling is completely open and all the ducts are visible. One of the diagonal walls between the escalators and the tunnel is obviously temporary, and I suspect that is where a display of historical artifacts will go. The other temporary wall on the south side will eventually be opened up so that you can go directly into the new skyscraper without going outside. And lastly, as you said, the old one had no elevator, which doesn't meet ADA laws.

Power Station TOD apartments - 1528 W North Temple

THE FUTURE OF NORTH TEMPLE CONTINUES TO ADVANCE

285-Unit Market-Rate Housing development replacing the Diamond Lil’s Restaurant building & accompanying parking lot. The project will be a 2-building apartment complex and 5 floors.

https://citizenportal.slcgov.com/Cit...owInspection=#

Project Renderings:

This project is directly across North Temple from the 100 acre Rocky Mountain Power plant site

Also across North Temple is the 1625 W. North Temple project:

On the opposite side (east side) of Cornell St is the site of SPARK!

North of this project is also the location of the Cornell Street Apartments

Fairpark: https://www.buildingsaltlake.com/fai...-north-temple/

The area is rapidly growing! Even with the RMP project years away, the area is already starting to fill out.
