he he thats funny. I'm originally from "SoJo," and I remember first hearing a friend refer to it as such in the late 80s- never thought it would catch on like it has (theres like some salon or somethin off of 104th that calls itself the SoJo. "WeJo" however, maybe a bit of a stretcth . Who knows- it sounds so hideous it may stick!

YAY! I LIVE IN A VERY HIGH DANGER ZONE!

The house we built 6 years ago is designed to shift on its foundation and we have a pumping system in the event of serious flooding, since we are right next to the river, and the old riverbed still runs right under the yard and house.

I'm in an old brick house as well, about 100 feet from the fault. I have done some seismic upgrades to the house that I am pretty sure will keep my house from collapsing on me, but would still result in my house being beyond repair. My biggest fear is the double masonry walls falling inward into bedrooms. All beds in our house are against interior, load bearing walls that have been reinforced and anchored to the foundation. I think I spent about a grand doing it, spread out over a year. The most expensive part was having some one come out and drill anchors into the foundation. Still, that was only about $300. The rest (installing sill plates, anchoring those to the foundation, installing ties that connect floor joists, ceiling and rafters to supporting walls, cross bracing of attic, etc) I did my self.

If you are in a sandstone foundation with brick on top you are screwed.

Thanks but no thanks. I'd rather live in a walkable neighborhood near downtown for many many years rather than simply worry about when "The Big One" will hit and choose to live outside the danger zone.

So does that make Bangetrer Hwy; The "Highway to the Danger Zone"

That is the best pic of SLC I have ever seen; minus the smog.

Where was this taken from? How recent is the photo?

I'm guessing from a plane as it arrives at SLC International.

Looks pretty recent.

Here is a cleaned up version I did.

Now that is what I wanted to see. Thanks for the clean-up version. I have actually saved it on my hard drive to possibly use as a wall paper.

Now I can see that it does look recent. I would also think it was taken from an aircraft on final; just by determining from the structures in the foreground /below.

One can see I-80, left center

These are two very different downtowns...

"sooo much more attractive" is in the eyes of the beholder. I do not know how often you have been there but Denver has a very nice downtown with some excellent architecture and a very good and progressive vibe.

SLC also has a downtown with cool aspects to it. It, however, is not sooo much more attractive. It is different.

I really appreciate the new focus on a downtown that was taken for granted in SLC. Excellent! I would not start comparing yet. There is a pretty large difference.

SLC wins for a new progressive attitude and a much more powerful and intimate surroundings...ie the mountains.

What are you using to clean up the image? Photoshop?

Salt Lake rarely looks good in the winter, except in shots taken right after snow when everything is still white.
Otherwise, the whole city is a dingy brown/gray color. Brown trees, mountains, buildings, filthy air, roads, etc. Yuck.

I often wonder what first time visitors think when they arrive in winter. The air is disgusting, everything is brown and dead and the city really looks terrible. I'm sure impressions improve once people get up into the mountains, but still.

.... then again, maybe I'm just in a mad mood today since I haven't seen the sun or been able to do much outdoors for a few weeks now.
Anyone else sick of winter yet?

I've been sick of winter since September (before it started).

Here in the Mid-Atlantic area, it is hard to determine when is winter. It rains one day and then sleet /freezing rain /snow the next. I am getting sick and tired of the flip-flop between winter and spring.

At least you guys have seasons.

I've been sick of winter since December 26th. I think early winter/Christmas time in SLC is wonderful. The winter is new and clean, it seems to snow more, and everything is well...Christmas-y. But after that, yeah, I don't care for winter around here. This is the only time of year that I miss Southern cali. But come Spring, I don't know that there is anywhere more beautiful than northern utah and SLC.

I've been the same way this year. I usually really enjoy winter and the snow, but this year I was done with it all as soon as Christmas was over.

I was great till December 21st (winter solstice), then I became sad when it appeared the sun was dormant, as if it had died for three days (22, 23, 24) The sun's dormancy resided near the Southern Crux or "cross," constellation. Then, on December 25th, the sun appeared to move one degree north, signifying the lengthening of days and the coming of Spring. This made me so optimistic; the sun was reborn or "resurrected." Now I'm looking forward to the Spring Equinox (Easter) when the days finally become longer than the nights, like "good" conquering "evil," providing the necessary light and warmth for plant growth; which will in turn thankfully help filter our air! Then we won't need to photoshop any more photos of the Salt Lake City skyline!
