I guess that's towards me. I don't take responsibility for other people making assumptions that the AS+GG design is dead and then going off the rails. There's plenty of real off-topic discussion happening in the Chicago development threads every day. I thought people would be interested in seeing an alternate proposal by a leading architect, but noted for the future.

I, and many others, appreciate the additional insight into alternate proposals. Don't stop on the account of others who didn't know what they were looking at.

Disagree completely. There was context to his post, it's not his fault that you didn't read SpyGuys comment and just freaked out based off a rendering

The original Tribune is such a good looking building,

If they ever do build something next to it, it would be cool if they sloped the roof/parapet past Sears and added a cool looking spire to be in a really high height caliber globally. Also Chicago doesn't have that many spires...

Happy 2019

Was this approved by alderman? Or did it not have to go through that process yet?

Hi Everyone, I've been looking at this forum for years and I finally decided to make an account and start posting.

I felt I had some rather depressing news to share regarding this project...

Was at Open House Chicago in October and had a long conversation with an ASGG senior designer and he clued me in on some work going on with this project.

Seems that they are happy with the overall design but they are reworking the base of the new tower.

Sadly, he made it quite clear that 1422' will not be the final height. He estimated that it will likely land anywhere between 1250' and 1400'. Still very tall but not quite as tall as we'd hoped.

This isn't depressing at all, in fact it's great news, I always thought this was a pipe dream to begin with and assumed nothing would be built. A 1,250-1,400 footer is way better than nothing.

The fact that it sounds like they're still planning something is great. Chicago hasn't seen a 400+ meter roof since the Sears Tower, I certainly wouldn't mind another. Did they mention anything about time frame? Could it possibly start this year or next?

Although I wonder why they don't just shoot for tallest if they're so close

Chances of it going this year are probably slim I think they said they would start once they finished renovating Tribune tower

That'd be next year, correct?

I'm really excited now, it sounds like they're serious about this thing. I think it was originally proposed at 1,388, so not really a huge difference. I wonder if the design is any different.

According to this (https://www.chicagotribune.com/business/...ent-outlook-ryan-ori-20180417-story.html) early 2020 but honestly, who knows atm...needs to be approved still as Bvic said

Right, is there any reason it wouldn't be approved though?

As far as time, wouldn't it be in there best interest to not wait considering the market is supposedly hot right now?

Chicago's developers should propose all supertalls as megatalls so they still end up with a sizable supertall in the end. 1250-1400' isn't something to scoff at though.

^I honestly have no idea why they don’t. What do they have to lose by proposing a 2,000 foot tower knowing they’d only need 1,000 to be profitable. Of course it would only work once or twice, per developer. The Art of the Deal!
