Walked by this one yesterday, sorry didn't grab a picture. Structure is gone there was a bit of scrap metal left in the corner that they were loading to haul away. There was a massive dirt/gravel pile that they were filling the hole up and seemed to be grading to a certain point the site.

I know this one has underground parking and I have no construction experience so wasn't sure why they have to fill the site up before they begin digging the underground parking. For example the picture above my post here, that hole/ditch has been filled up.

they backfill the basements of demolished buildings so that caisson drill rigs can work before excavation starts.

This article explains the process of digging a condo garage:

https://urbantoronto.ca/news/2022/11...ng-built.50070

You basically need these large caisson drill rigs to drill deep holes in the ground to drop steel rods, called piles, which can then be used to "shore" up the walls of the excavation as it gets deeper:

https://urbantoronto.ca/news/2022/11...ng-built.50070

The end result is this:

https://urbantoronto.ca/news/2022/11...ng-built.50070

You can see the vertical steel rods which the shoring rigs place before excavation begins, with wooden slats placed between each pile as excavation progresses.

The caisson drill rigs need a flat surface to drive the piles however, so old basements are always temporarily backfilled while this work occurs before being excavated again.

If you don't backfill and install the piles, the pit walls would collapse inwards after a certain depth.

There is another element, tie-backs, which also happens as construction progresses involving the drilling of steel cables into the earth beside shored walls to support them.. These cables are then abandoned underground after construction is complete.

This some times causes issues...

There are a couple of variations of this process which can address different conditions, but that's the basics of it.

No problem! A fun Hamilton-related fact is that the largest provider of caisson drill rigs in Ontario, Bauer Equipment, is actually based in Stoney Creek.

And the surface of this one is along the "ridge" of the sandbar that runs diagonally across the core, all the way from Burlington Heights. Bedrock will probably be deeper than other sites downtown.

Technical info is always welcome. Thank you!

This one also has the train tunnel immediately adjacent, which should keep things interesting. I'm really excited to watch this one go up, they are probably going to be the nicest looking buildings in Hamilton!

Oh oh, train tunnel, is this where CN pulls out a yellow card and holds up another development at well beyond the 11th hour?!

Well, it's CP this time, who usually give the public sector a harder time in general... But believe me, I'm sure the tunnel is something that CP would like people to keep quiet about. Their tunnel is, in quite a few ways, knowingly a net negative for the public. Being only one track limits GO service, it's super hard to modify, etc. And it's not like development directly impacts a yard or anything. If they have any issues, then they ought to be prepared to modify or upgrade the tunnel to mitigate things, not the city or a developer! CN can at least say they are generous with the amount of trains they let through. CP doesn't really have as much good faith to go around with anyone, lol.

With 5 levels of underground, I would be surprised to see this done in 2.5 years. More like 3.5. We'll be lucky to see this at grade come fall 2024.

Brad Lamb creates quality developments. This is a copy paste job of his King Charlotte project in Toronto, it looks to be anyway.

Lamb gets a lot of flack on this forum for some reason, but the truth is he's a great developer that cares about Toronto/Hamilton and wants to see the city progress. I'm very happy he got into Hamilton, even though the backwards city staff sent him running after a few years. He ditched most of his projects here, this is the only one that remains.
