Next is currently recreating old Alinea menus, which is why it’s so expensive lately. And Alinea is in another league compared to most restaurants—I don’t think it’s right to think about it as “dinner” but rather an experience. People won’t really bat an eye if you tell them how much you spent seeing Hamilton or going to a Bears game, but a dinner that expensive is seen as an extravagance because we still often think about food in a very utilitarian way.

Agreed. I honestly prefer to spend money at a nice restaurant than going to a sporting event. Places like Goosefoot, Band of Bohemia and Elizabeth in my neighborhood are excellent and well worth the money. And as you said, it is an experience. A 2-3 hour event that we fully enjoy.

I go out a bit too much, but we generally keep the tab below $100 drinks, taxes, entrees, and tip for a couple. I don't see the need to spend more than that except on a special occasion. I went to fat rice the other day because friends were in town and we went a bit crazy and ran up a $400 tab for 4 people, but again I don't know how I could spend that per person. But yes, it's cool that you can get spectacular food experiences if you really want them.

I also eat out quite a bit, probably a lot more than I should. But its typically at the Mariano's hot bar... $7.99/lb for anything from pot roast to fried chicken. PILE IT ON, BOYS!

That said, I'm pretty sure a lot of these examples people have posted regarding $300 to $700 dinner outings are very rare, once in a while instances. Probably my most expensive meal was at the now defunct Moto as part of the bachelor party of one of my childhood friends, about 7 years ago. $175 a head, plus an additional $25 for the groomsmen covering the groom's bill.

I'll take my usual carne asada burrito or torta milanesa and tall boy of Miller Lite any day

My wife and I eat out too much too, but generally at cheapish places (Blaze, Naf Naf, Flaco's, Hax, etc).

I couldn't find the Chicago suburban development thread

Rockford is making a comeback — and so is the city's pride

Long known for manufacturing, Rockford is in the midst of a reboot. A once sleepy downtown has come alive, and the pride among residents is palpable.

If you haven’t been to Rockford in a few years, it might be time to plan a visit. While you were sleeping, the area’s downtown started waking up. And now, work is underway to transform an old, dilapidated factory called the Amerock Building into a 160-room Hilton Embassy Suites Hotel and Rockford Conference Center that’s steps from the action.

Wandering around the urban core of the city, about 90 miles northwest of Chicago, there are bustling spots that feel a bit like Milwaukee or Indianapolis or other river-lined cities in the Midwest. Rockford has many of those elements that city dwellers have come to expect from energized urban areas: craft breweries (Prairie Street Brewing Co. and Carlyle Brewing Co.), a bustling restaurant scene (with locally sourced offerings at places like Social Urban Bar & Restaurant and Octane InterLounge), a coffee roaster (Rockford Roasting Co.), swanky lofts, yoga studios and more.

^ That's good to hear! Rockford has a great little downtown with some excellent microbreweries (Carlyle being my favorite). Hope their core continues to develop and fill in!

On my early voting ballot in the Logan Square area: A new annual 0.25% tax on properties valued at over $750,000 to fund mental health.

Advisory referenda thank god.

As if my $12,000 per year is not enough... oh wait I have to pay for the retierment of teachers that stopped working before I was even born.

Whiners/snowflakes, no one cares about your tax bills. They have nothing to do with this thread.

Oh, i know, they they think taxes only benefit POC. Guarantee you they'd be happy to pay taxes if it only went to white folks. Well, too bad!

Unfair taxation is taxation without representation. These whiners have plenty of representation.

What's new is that beginning in 1970s the Republican party race-bated social programs, and this was later doubled-down on by the Clintons. No one associated taxes/social programs with any particular group until very recently. And that propaganda has been very effective indeed, however untrue and racist it is. That's why a lot of poor white folks don't even think of Medicare or Medicaid as social welfare programs, because they can't possibly imagine that they are on welfare given it's racial stigmatization.

I agree, it's dumb because cities shouldn't be providing mental healthcare. The Federal government needs to provide funds at a national level.
