I can't say much more. But a very obvious destination that at the moment has a nearby competitor.

When you add up all the hints given:
lower 48
new tail in Edmonton... but has been here before

You see its pretty clear... Looks like DFW. Plus we've all been hearing this for a while. 2014 should be a great year for Edmonton (YEG).

AA is not curently withdrawing from YYC. However there have been nurmerous attempts at improving service together with a general decline in service by AA in the YYC market.

AA used to service YYC with double daily flights to both ORD and DFW. The ORD service was withdrawn and the DFW service increased to 3 daily. Then the DFW service was decreased to 2 daily and YYC-ORD on regional jet was a short lived expirement. Last year was WS to ORD once per day (AA codeshare) along with 3 daily to DFW in the summer. This year was WS to ORD plus 1 daily WS to DFW supplemented by 2 daily AA to DFW. The general speculation last January was that AA would slowly transfer services over to WS.

Yes, DFW will be another important link to YEG.

Let me guess....One daily flight, leaving DFW late afternoon and departing YEG early in the AM. Frankly, that's not what we need at YEG. We need more afternoon departures into US hubs.

I hope I'm wrong, but I have a feeling this is what we're getting!!

So, we should be seeing August's passenger numbers soon. I forget what 2012 yielded (650k give or take) but I'm gonna guess we'll see pretty darn close to 700k in 2013. C'mon EIA, get on it.

With the extra flights coming in 2014 we should be able to push over the 7 million mark and a little bit more

BY the time AA and CP/PWA got together, the YEG-YYC portion was flown by CP with AA codeshare. This is the service mentioned by Lubicon. In 1999 CP started YEG-ORD service codeshared with AA, this was YEG first openskies new route.

Regarding the Icelandair announcement, I notice reference to this being facilitated by some new air transport agreement between Canada and Iceland. Can someone expatiate on this? By Googling around I have learned that there was some sort of "Open Skies" deal with Iceland in 2006 or 2007. However, in 2010 the Canadian Consumers' Association complained to the government that this was allegedly changed by Canada to limit Icelandair flights. Since this was at the time when Emirates was trying to get new flights, the implication was that one of the existing Canadian airlines said to have a dog-in-the-manger attitude to these things was lobbying to nobble Icelandair.

How did this current situation come about?

I'd expect a daily flight to start with a 738, MD-83 or maybe a 319...

The fellow I was speaking to said its likely the 319's will replace most of the current 738 and MD Canadian runs from DFW in due course.

Cage, a 319?? Yikes - nothing better??? Is it safe? We just flew on of these on TAP from LHR to LIS and it was gruesome! Worse part it was supposed to be business class booked on AC but at LHR they had NO records of our reservation...not sure what was worse the 319 we got on or TAP.

You're joking right? UAL uses these all the time from YEG. They're a great plane.

I prefer a Boeing. The 319 - seats were tight. Seat Guru says they were 30" which I think is tighter than we would ever see in North America. I think.

You realize seat pitch has really nothing to do with the manufacturer of the airplane, but instead the wishes of their customer? In this case TAP.

Boeing and Airbus both make great airliners.

Oh and Air Canada Rouge has the 30 pitch, and WestJet is around 31-32 depending on the type.

The 319's are new build, and their seat count is close enough to that of the Mad Dogs that they're really meant to replace the latter in the coming years. The 738's have significantly more seats so, no, they aren't really interchangeable. Not sure what EdmTrekker is going on about re: 319's...
