I'm not saying that there is no activity downtown. However I was referring specifically to SHED. In responding to my comments you can't discard what this actually is, and the specified boundaries. This is from the Stantec Site:

"The Sports, Hospitality and Entertainment District (SHED) is the focal point of the revitalization of Winnipeg’s downtown. The attractions in this 11 block area will be connected together in a meaningful way and infused with new life by residential and commercial development."

So most of what you included is NOT in the SHED. My point is that the concept of District - geographically specific, connected and homogeneous - has not been fulfilled. Either drop the moniker or actually commit to this purpose and make it happen.

Thanks for the site plan, wags. That context helps. What is going to the expanded part of the complex?

^ hopefully some sort of a canteen - because they removed the previous one that was there as part of the interior refresh.

On a related note, it would be nice to see the City of Winnipeg replace one or two of its dinosaur arenas like Maginot with a new twin-rink complex. Garden City's facility is so pleasant and functional (I assume it's owned by the city or the community centre?)... it would be nice if there were a couple more like that around town. Those 1960s buildings must be getting close to the end of their lifespans by now...

The City was looking at replacing Terry Sawchuk and River East. Valley Gardens CC was trying to push it along. They did some site planning and such. But IIRC, the local councilor didn't want it. So they did the repairs to Terry Sawchuk and here we are.

I play weekly at Seven Oaks and it's a dream.

What if a new multiplex movie theatre was built in the area? Something similar to the one at Polo Park? Just blue-skying.

My daughter's "home" arena for ringette is Seven Oaks, so she plays and practices there once or twice a week. Based on my experience over the past few years with kids in hockey/ringette - it's gotta be right at the top of the list for facilities.

It's a treat for players and spectators.

My son played a lot of spring hockey there. It's a nice place for sure. I'd say that only The Rink and the Hockey For All Centre are in the same calibre of truly nice, multi-rink venues in Winnipeg, and 2 of those 3 are privately owned. But even then, none of them offer the basic spectator comfort of seats with armrests as community rinks do in some other places. In Winnipeg, that privilege is reserved only for the NHL arena

Considering the rendering of the St James Civic Centre shows the parking lot and the site only has a parking lot it is clearly on the Ness (front) side of the building. The interior render appears to be of a lobby area which the existing facility definitely needs.

It will be interesting to to see how the space is adapted to the long term plan to basically make it a city owned seniors center.

yup Seven Oaks & Hockey for All are dream rinks, Gateway pretty good too i enjoy the new East End one as well.

I've been around minor hockey since 2009 (daughter was 5) and been part of meetings where Bertrand & Maginot were being closed and a new double rink will be build in South East end of city, that was 14 yrs ago!

^ Bertrand and Maginot are downright depressing. It's hard to believe they're still in use. Is the City just riding them out until the roof or ice plant fail?

Maginot was closed for a year for mold issues back in 2012'ish. i truly thought it wasnt going to come back to life. those rinks should be used for nothing but skating lessons.

Certainly one option. With growing downtown population, maybe it could be a reality. But in order to call this area a SHED, it requires more than a hockey arena (and a funnelator).

West kildonan. The shower literally overflows. So you need to shower first or just dont shower cause you're ankle deep in disgusting water.

I think that’s EXACTLY what will happen! Stay tuned for some lovely aspirational renderings… a demo permit… and then nothing…

Why can’t we hope for more growth for RRC? The new building is beautiful! Money on urban educational architecture is always well spent. Way better than more suburban roadways to no where!
