Vertiginous Toronto! I don't know why city council even tries to limit heights anymore (see: YSL). It is so clearly the direction the city is going in.

I thought about this going through your list too. The attractions you noted are basically an extensive list of what I would show people if they came to visit me in Winnipeg, but I can see it taking like 2 days tops.

- an hour or two at the Forks
- an hour or two in the Exchange
- an hour in Osborne, Corydon and West Broadway combined
- 3-4 hours in Assiniboine Park/Fort Whyte Alive
- an hour in St. Boniface
- an hour at the leg

The Mint, the CMHR, and art galleries and museums would definitely not be on my list.

Add in eating a few times a day and that's two days. I like living in Winnipeg, but I really don't know how I could stretch it into a 5 day trip. A trip to Whiteshell might be worth it too, but that's just one extra day.

But like you said, people vacation differently. Maybe I'm just bad at it. But I'll also note that my above itinerary would be tailored to my friends, not me. I could wander around the exchange for hours, but there's no chance my family or friends would.

Sometimes the height limits are set for good reasons, to preserve views or prevent shadows. But there is a bizarre moral angle too. There's a contingent that view height as a kind of capitalist indulgence that needs to be reined in through wholesome community activism. There is typically no practical impact if a building is cut down to 58 floors from 63 floors but it makes some people feel better.

Of course the developers aren't idiots so if they want 60 floors they ask for 70 then take of 10 as a concession.

I never used to be into Montreal's skyline at all, but the past few weeks of photos have really started to warm me up to it more. Looking awesome.

You could live in London or Paris for 3 months without a job and do interesting new CMHR or Mint type things every day. Just going to the major free museums and galleries in London would take weeks (and I would get fed up and want a break after day 3 or so).

I've debated doing something like renting a nice apartment in Montreal for August and working remotely there with maybe a week of actual holiday time.

Everyone is going to have their own subjective sense of what is interesting or worthy of visiting and what kind of pace they want. I personally hate superficial packed itineraries where you go to the Eiffel Tower for 45 minutes to take some selfies then run off to the Louvre for more selfies, etc.

I will say that there are some larger Canadian cities that don't have a whole lot of touristy stuff to do, or picturesque areas to explore. Some are more business or industry oriented. There are big US cities that are similar (and all seem to be kind of the same; come visit our local quasi-craft brewery, go to a ball game, go to our diner/BBQ type place...).

When I go to the Canadian cities I'm familiar with I usually only have a few days and I don't get to see all the stuff I want to. This goes for 4-5 day stretches in Toronto, Montreal, or Halifax. Familiarity plays a big role. Every so often here on SSP we get someone who claims there is nothing to do in Toronto because they wandered around King and Bay at 9 pm on a Wednesday and it seemed boring.

Right. And if they're given 70 they can still just build 60 anyway if that's still the most profitable configuration as these are maximums not minimums or exact targets.

It's rising really fast now. Will this be a steel tower? So far all I see are concrete pillars being poured. I know the end result doesn't matter but there is something fun about watching a steel skyscraper go up you don't get with an concrete one.

I hear steel might be coming soon. I can't say I know much about the difference between construction techniques but seeing this core fly up so fast is fun to see!
