A lot has changed. But I assume you're only interested in high-rise development, so see the first page of this thread.... There are 4 buildings from 19 to 33 stories under construction right now in downtown. There are also some old proposals that are coming back, like the 9th and Hope project.

Here's an interesting video showing the vacant space in the buildings sold/in the process of being sold by MPG Office Trust.

Library Tower and Gas Company Tower are clearly in the worst shape here.

1111 Wilshire. I think they are moving in furniture or something... it looks like it will be opening soon. The ground floor retail is still empty

Sorry, this is a terrible picture; its the demolition of Crash Mansion. It looked like they were tearing apart the roof or something

1111 Wilshire is officially open, and has been for a little while now. At least the residential portion. And the second location of Plan Check, the popular comfort food spot on Sawtelle in West LA, will eventually be going in on one of the ground floor retail spots.

Can someone confirm this is actually on the building and not photoshopped?

^ The photo of Howard's jersey on the front of the BH Hotel posted on Twitter yesterday was apparently Photoshopped. This probably is too.

Contemplating on weather to head to Downtown or not..Don't really see the need since nothing new has happened since my previous venture.

I had a curious question in regards to the new Renaissance Inn going up next to the Courtyard. We know it will be over 20 floors. But according to the room count, it will have 450 rooms, compared to the 23 floor Courtyard which will only have 393 rooms. Is this implying it will be taller, or wider? The lot for the Renaissance is bigger, but I always love taller :/

The Dwight Howard image on Disney Hall is Photoshopped. I bought all the billboards on that campaign (save for the one on Staples Center, which AEG owns), so I'm very, very familiar with where the boards are. That is not one of them, and Disney Hall does not have a conditional use permit to sell advertising. Otherwise you would have seen something there before.

Regarding the Renaissance, no one really knows, but having 57 additional rooms should make it at least a little taller, depending on the room size. And the lots are pretty similar in size, so it really depends on the massing, and how they program the rooms. I wouldn't expect it to be much taller than 30 floors, though.

I really like 1111 Wilshire not because its extraordinary architecture but because they used interesting facade materials and it sits very nicely on the street, helping to create a continuous street wall.

Farewell Villaraigosa

Thought this video was worth given mention. Hate him or love him, under his two terms, he changed Los Angeles immensely. The LA of 2004 doesn't compare to the city we have now.

I think he did a great job. LA was in a very bad shape before he got into office, he did as much as he could to make LA better I hope the new mayor keep moving LA in the right direction.

VillaGODrosa definitely changed LA for the better. We look to his administration as the moment LA turned from a sunbelt sprawl city into a 21st century new urbanist model.

^ It's certainly a pivot point in LA history (for the better, imo), though I wouldn't deify him, or any other mayor, for that matter.

Not to get into a huge debate here but the city is in a huge hole financially, it still looks like Beirut in too many places, streets are in terrible shape, homelessness is still a major issue (even in upscale areas), and a true liveable, walkable urban community is still very unnatural, and something that one has to really make an effort to experience. In my experience, it all too often feels very forced. There were some nice things done over the past decade, but to think that another occupant in the office wouldn't have presided over similar development, if not more, is a bit naive. Saw him speak at UCLA and he came off as a used car salesman who thinks he's the s***. Which pretty much confirmed the impression I've gotten all along. Pretty hesitant to give him that much credit here.

Villaraigosa deserves a ton of credit for his work on transportation. It's the one area where he was an unequivocal success.

Outside of that, hes a mixed bag. I hesitate to give him too much credit or blame, given the fact that balance of political power in Los Angeles leans heavily towards the city council. A lot of the lingering issues (potholes, homelessness, budget deficits) go back decades prior to Villaraigosa taking office.

Agreed. His transportation legacy will be huge. I'll throw all the bike stuff under that (ciclavia, bike paths, etc) as well.

Rumors are that Eataly's prefered location for a Los Angeles restaurant is "The Bloc" here in Downtown. This would be great.

New South Park Rentals Will Cater to Grown-Ups

Quote:
Another South Park parking lot will bite the dust when the 96-unit Urban Village, South Park project breaks ground near Olive and Olympic. The developer, simply named Urban Village (they're the group behind a new mixed-user in Long Beach), says entitlements and acquisition are all set and there are just a few things left to do before work starts in September. The site is directly behind the Crash Mansion nightclub, which is currently getting torn down--Urban Village didn't immediately return our call about whether the rowdy club was getting the boot to make way for their project. It doesn't sound like there's retail involved, but the seven-story Urban Village, South Park will have four live/work units, private roofdecks, a dog park, parking, and a fitness center. "While many projects in Downtown cater to students and offer a dorm-ish environment," the developer says in a statement, "Urban Village, South Park is a blend of harmony and amenities."
Edit: large rendering

It's these kind of projects that could benefit that particular area of Downtown. That area is a sea of parking lots. The Streetcar will run just south of this project and it could benefit each other for covenant transportation to the rest of the immediate Downtown Area. I just wish it were taller.
