Looks like MTS centre is getting another 12M in upgrades. This time to the concourses as expected. Considering the current concourse at MTS actually still looks pretty good and modern (although on the cheap side) this is a huge investment. In my calculation this brings the price tag to over 40 million in renos since 2011

A little bit of an update from the city of Moncton website regarding the new Moncton events centre, scheduled for opening in September 2018. This update is from January.

PROJECT BY NUMBERS
- One trip around the concourse level is in excess of 350m.
- To date the contractor has completed over 500 QA/QC (quality) inspections.
- The main lobby ceiling is over 5m high.
- There is over 250 m of catwalk in the roof trusses overlooking the arena bowl.
- There will be over 60 TV’s throughout the building.
- There are over 80 slab inserts in the ice slab concrete. These are used as anchor points for various shows.
- Over 133,000 man hours have been involved in building the facility to date.
- There are approximately 110 people working on the site daily.

INTERESTING FACTS
1) There will be acoustic “lapendary” (sound absorbing) panels hung from the top of the trusses.
2) There will be a type of electronic signage on the east and west sides of the bowl.
3) The building is designed to host both end stage or center stage concerts.

We're going to have to wait a little longer for the release of the much anticipated private sector report on options for updating the aged city-owned FirstOntario Centre.

The $240,000 study, which has been in the city's hands for several months, will now go before councillors April 5 instead of March 22 as planned.

The debate has been pushed back so Mayor Fred Eisenberger and Glen Norton, director of economic development, can attend the meeting, said John Hertel, director of strategic partnerships and revenue generation, who's now handling the file as part of the city's land development task force.

Eisenberger and Norton are expected to be away on a trade mission to Germany at the time of the original March date. Hertel says both men want to be present when staff finally presents the report laying out costed options for the 30-year-old downtown arena, formerly known as Copps Coliseum.

Council will likely have no appetite for committing itself to an immediate course of action given the city's deepening budget challenges.

But the fact the faded arena was an element in why Hamilton recently lost out on hosting the Canadian Hockey League's Memorial Cup tournament indicates the time has come to seriously discuss its future entertainment and economic development role.

The report by international venue experts Brisbin Brook Beynon Architects (BBB) includes both a technical analysis of every physical aspect of the centre and spells out two costly makeover options.

One involves turning the lower bowl into a state-of-the-art 8,000-or-so seat facility. The other is a full renovation, elevating the 17,000-seat building to current NHL and other pro league standards.

Though the report remains confidential, the first option is believed to be in the $70-million range while the second clocks in at around $250 million.

On the face of it, option A makes far more sense. The only reason to give the entire building a makeover is to buy some more time before replacing the venue, but let's face it... there is no major league team in there making a stink about moving if they don't get either a new or improved facility. If and when a NHL team arrives, the discussion is going to focused on a new building anyway given that the current one is now over 30 years old... there's no point in pouring more than you have to in the existing arena.

Fix up the lower bowl which is probably all that's needed for most events, and just slap a fresh coat of paint on the upper bowl which effectively acts as overflow seating. In some ways, this is how the MTS Centre functioned in its first years... the upper level was very basic with few amenities and really used only for big concerts. That changed when the NHL arrived and management finally had to improve that level.

Pretty sure the roof needs extensive work done to it to ensure its integrity for another 30 years. Dont know if that $70m lower bowl upgrade covers that.

The arena only has one concourse for the two bowls but in that above picture you can see how they could have added a second level concourse on the roof of the exisiting one and connect it to the underside of the upper bowl. Apparently the roof was also built to be easily lifted to add a ring of sky boxes as well.

Any word on bell place in laval? seems like construction has taken forever. started in 2014 and its almost impossible to find a pic of the construction. Much like videotron was untill close to the end

this reminds me. Yardman arena in Belleville is getting a nice little upgrade for the AHL team coming there.

I'm from Hamilton I'd rather have an AHL team than an OHL team. I think Belleville made out well with the trade

With the NHL always so hesitant and reluctant to expand into Canada the chances of the NHL moving to Hamilton is fairly slim when you add in the fact of the Sabres and Leafs asking for a boat load of money on top. Having a top notch intimate AHL or OHL facility with modern amenities and suites makes far more sense and bang for buck.
