Wow! I've never seen that angle before! That one actually shows the details of the balconies including the railing which was basically ignored in all of the other models and renderings. Looks even better to me now!

I was surprised when I first saw the railings too. I like them. They add a nice bit of repetition and detail to the whole structure.

I really don't understand how they're going to adjust the formwork every floor to get such a great variety of shapes for the balconies. Is it going to be computerized? Or just done by hand very carefully, new and different every floor? Seems like an amazing amount of work and expense!

However they do it, this building is going to be unbelievable.

^^^ I believe I read that they are using GPS and computers to coordinate the edges of the balconies.

It's a bit different, but this is a shot I took of Skybridge in the West Loop. Odd coloring here.

I think the columns and most of the formwork will be the same for each floor except for the balconies.

From a developer's point of view, the beauty is that the building actually has a very boring, rectangular floorplate that is fairly cheap to build. All you have to do with the balconies is mess with a movable pour stop or something along those lines. The end result being a very iconic and "organic" looking building at very little cost premium when compared to a boring rectangle.

I know that McHugh does not yet have a GPS system for the edgework. I think they will be using a new set of cooridinates every floor. The same will go for 400 LSD. Every Twist in the floor requires new points and radii.

I was just in the netherlands and in an architectural magazine i picked up while there, I saw a building very much like Aqua (undulating and asymetrical balconies) but much shorter. Seeing that Gang came from OMA, I would not be surprised if her inspiration came from this very building.

The netherlands took the wind out of my perception that Chicago was on the verge of being a world leader in architecture again. I do think we have the talent to go up against the world's best, I just don't think we have an enlightened enough public to charge past the likes of what's being built in Spain and other parts. On the other hand, It's never been clearer to me how incredibly strong Chicago's place is when it comes to the concentration of amazing modern architecture.

indeed. in order for a society to create great architecture, it is imperitive that it first value such an endeavor.

sadly, it's quite clear where our american society's values lie.
