Yeah, don't get me wrong I think LA has a pretty good metro system. Add to that we're pretty much the only large city in the U.S that is able to keep the cost of our rail projects under control which bodes well for future endeavors. Our biggest obstacle will be getting the zoning and regulatory changes needed to create the type of city that can support an extensive mass rapid transit system.

Unfortunately I'm fairly pessimistic on that front.

Yes the blue will run from Azuza to Long Beach, and the gold from East LA to Santa Monica....

(sorry off topic, I know)

Wait...if that's true that seems like a missed opportunity. You're saying that even though they share the same tracks downtown, you will still have to make a transfer once there if you plan on traveling from Azusa to SM? Couldn't they just have alternating trains that go to both areas?

I hope this won't be the case.

You could but then you limit the potential service in half for both destinations. So at 7th metro, instead of:

LB > Azusa
3 min...
SM > East Los
3 min...
LB > Azusa

Now you have

LB > Azusa
3 min...
SM > East Los
3 min...
LB > East Los
3 min...
SM > Azusa
3 min...
etc...

So just using 3 minute headways as an example, now you have made people wait 12 minutes instead of 6 for the next train you missed to the same place.

Where as you can get off the train and wait 3 minutes to go to a differently destined train under the current plan (times being just examples, again).

Metro does not like running 3 or 4 services through a single train station.

Nope. East west line and north south line. It totally makes sense to do it that way. If you try to mix them up how you want you will end up getting back to back trains going through DTLA going to Santa Monica. And it would completely screw up the map of trying to figure out how to travel.

Expect Azusa to Santa Monica to be at least a two and a half hour ride.

That's a beautiful thing right there. I was in that area over the weekend and the amount of construction between the Wilshire Grand, Metropolis, Oceanwide and Circa is staggering. That area will look and feel completely different 5 years from now. The convention center really needs to complement the area around it.

I can't imagine why it wouldn't be closer to an hour and half.

That's pretty generous. Maybe 2 hours. Maybe.

And that doesn't include travel time to and from the station, as well as wait times at each transfer.

It's definitely less than a 2.5-hour one-way trip, but it's also more than 1.5 hours. Azusa to Union Station is 55 minutes, Union Station to Pico Station is 10, Pico to Santa Monica is 44. Back of the napkin math say that amounts to 1 hour 49 minutes, plus another 6-10 minutes for transferring between trains.

Although to be quite frank, I'm not sure why anyone would want to make that trip on Metro Rail. A four-hour round trip just to go to the beach? Count me out.

Yea. After reading some of the replies, I can see why it wouldn't make too much sense. Transferring once doesn't sound too bad, and I wouldn't expect alternating trains to be exactly 50/50 coming from Azusa. Maybe 3:1 or something like that based on demand, but seems like the cons outweigh the pros in this situation.

It's long but not the end of the world. As for why people would do it, have you heard of this thing called saving money? If you aren't super hard up for money i could see taking public transit there and Uber back. The metro is probably the cheapest system in the countr for coverage versus fares. The passes are an amazing deal also.

Let's be honest most people have some drinks/herb at the beach or at nearby establishments. Not drinking and driving is essential.

Hey guys, anyone have an update regarding MyFigueroa and the 7th street streetscape improvements? When are they starting? Those are going to be huge for DTLA's appearance and user friendliness.

I doubt driving from Azusa to Santa Monica would be that much faster than taking the blue and gold lines when the regional connector is finished

Azusa-Pasadena on the 210 ~ 30 mins
Pasadena-Sherman Oaks on the 134 ~ 45 mins
Sepulveda Pass-SantaMonica ~ who knows? at least 30.

about 1hr 45 driving vs about 2 hr transit.

But look at the distance traveled... almost 50 miles from point to point. 2 hours is pretty reasonable.

In other countries, this kind of distance is considered regional commuter rail, not metro. You will be able to do this in LA for $1.75 (in 2016 fare) with only 1 (free) transfer. It's a real festivs miracle

Right now in bad traffic Azusa > Santa Monica is 1 hour 5 minutes. There are very few instances where rail beat cars in time to destination in LA.
