Plans on hold to redevelop site of old Austin Opera House off South Congress Avenue

A mixed-use project is proposed at 200 Academy, home of the former Austin Opera House, is being put on hold due to the state of Austin's real estate market.

Previous redevelopment plans for the property called for thousands of square feet of housing, office, retail and restaurant space that would be anchored by a new 17,500-square-foot music venue.

While the reason they cite is concerning at first blush, I doubt there is anything actually Austin-specific, and it is likely instead due to the burgeoning national economic downturn affecting Austin as much as anywhere else.

600 Cumberland

600 Cumberland is a 120-unit apartment development with restaurant/retail storefront, below grade parking, lounge, fitness center, top floor deck, and pool/courtyard amenities. The project will participate in Austin’s Affordability Unlocked development bonus, which requires 50% of all units to be affordable to families earning an average of no more than 60% of Travis County MFI, including 20% of all units, which will be reserved for families earning no more than 50% of Travis County MFI.

This project is under development by Notional Development Partners, and features a top-tier design team including Perkins Eastman for architecture, Sixthriver for interior design, KFM for civil engineering, Wylie Engineering for MEP engineering, Dunaway for structural engineering, and TBG for landscape architecture.
