YXE and YQR announced as future routes for Canada Jetlines

Canada Jetlines plans on flying direct routes from YXE/YQR to Vancouver and Winnipeg. No commencement date has been announced.



Though great news, this does not open new direct routes from either airports; however opens YXE/YQR to further 1 stop destinations.

I heard that Saskatoon's new downtown highrise correctional facility will be opening in the near future... only one peculiar thing about it; it's signage says 'Holiday Inn and Suites'.

They are going to fly to some unique airports. Baltimore, MD. St. Petersburg, FL. Ontario, CA. Oakland, CA. Reno, NV. Love that there's going to be more destination options.

But... do people still go to Reno?

I actually really like the direct flight to Winnipeg from Regina. Even though it's only a 6 hour drive, it seems longer and more painful than the drive to Calgary. It's just barren wasteland from here to there (Brandon included). For the longest time WestJet didn't fly it and Air Canada just flew small turboprops between the two. Luckily WestJet smartened up and started going there, but it will be nice to have a third option.

That seems like an extremely ambitious route map for such a small airline. I can't imagine that they are really going to serve all of those destinations on a regular basis... at least not right off the hop?!

I was there about 2-3 years ago. It is run-down a little bit, but a unique vibe, more old-school Vegas with a bit of more well founded community around it.

This looks great. The more options the better. I am not sure about Reno, but would love to go to Lake Tahoe.

Interesting that they completely ignored the AC and WJ hubs of Toronto and Calgary. Winnipeg appears to be the big winner here, although it is a short hop from YQR and YXE

The business model seems to be going after cheaper gate options like Hamilton and Wpg. That does seem like an aggressive route map for 16 aircraft. There must be quite a few 1 or 2 stop per week destinations on there. Not sure about Oakland either - I suppose if SF is your style you just have to take ground transport.....assuming you get out of Oakland in one piece.

BART serves Oakland just as it does SFO. Easy-peasy. It's not some far-flung outpost airport.

You must be bang on re: the 1x/2x week destinations though... daily service to that many destinations would require a lot more than 16 aircraft.

Yes BART leaves every 5 minutes most of the day and costs like $10 direct to downtown SF.

It's nice to see that Jetlines has a firm order for 5 planes from Boeing. It's not just a Vancouver business group with "pie-in-the-sky" aspirations creating hype over their idea for a low cost airline. This airline is actually going to happen, although the routes in that graphic are just their dream right now of what they would do if they had 16 planes. It's yet to be seen whether they will get the funding to purchase 11 more planes.

Another 'unique' destination is Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport which is considerably smaller (1.4 million pax in 2012) than Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport (40.4 million pax in 2012) which ranks it in the top 10 US airports. This might just be a Winter destination serving the Canadian Snowbirds who travel to the Mesa area (as may be some of the other sun destinations).

^ A lot of snowbirds living close to the US border in the BC lower mainland and southern Manitoba are familiar with Phoenix-Mesa because it is one of the major destinations for Allegiant Air, an American ULCC.

Sounds like they will start with just 2 jets. That probably means at most 6 destinations this year. They have to raise a lot of capital. The price a fuel should help them out.

I haven't flown in a while. Are airlines still using the "fuel surcharge"? I would imagine so as they have been topping up ticket prices since oil was $20/brl

Yes.... and I don't imagine it will change any time soon. According to WestJet, they plan to use the fuel charges to cushion their profit margins.

YXE January 2015 Traffic Up

YXE and SAA is reporting January 2015 traffic up 0.9% or 133,788. This is YXE's busiest reported month ever!

YQR 2014 Passenger Increase

An empirical test of its efforts was the number of inbound and outbound passengers in 2014: 1.262 million. That’s an increase of 2.9 per cent over 2013 and the 10th consecutive year in which passenger numbers here rose.

Hunter said the loss of United’s links to Chicago and Denver likely won’t mean much, if any, loss of passengers, as most likely will travel via other airports, like Toronto, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Calgary or Vancouver.

In fact, he noted that no sooner had United Airlines announced cancellation of its service than rival Delta Air Lines, which already flies twice daily into Regina from Minneapolis, was on the phone to explore the possibility of expanded service
