That's good news, at least those two locations won't go totally dark. I can see a Kohl's filling the space nicely but I though Forever 21 was your typical mall store. A Mervyns location seem quite large for that type of store. Either way that's nice to see they won't be vacant for to long.

Hi Projects,

There is a call center in Draper which employs about 1500 plus employees.
This new place in South Jordan will be a data center and will employ about 50 plus employees. This facility will be one of several eBay computing centers in the United States and Europe.
But you probably already know that.

Anthony

Oh ok, that makes sense. Thanks.
It's always good news to hear a company adding jobs to a area when there has been so many layoffs from other places.

well, the rug has been pulled out from under us.... Rio Tinto will not host the US Mexico game. It will now be played in Columbus. Bummer. We will still most likely get a World Cup qualifier, but not nearly as cool as Mexico. Probably Trinidad and Tobago, Honduras of Costa Rica.

QUESTION:
Why on earth don't they put these massive call centers in office towers downtown?
It would do so much good for the city and we could save the suburbs for housing and strip malls

Well... I suppose they could if they made the sq. foot rent cheap enough, and the infrastructure of the building were able to accommodate the tele-business model. I don't think a new build tower would be economical enough for a telemarketing operation though. The developer would need to see too much of a lease return.

Perhaps, they could do something along the line of a four to five story infill building over in an area on the west/south west side. Say, especially where we could use some solid infill. As long as it has a very attractive street presence, I would be all for it. I wouldn't want to see any more of those type low rises that we find on the east side, along fifth or sixth south, or along I-15 in places like Sandy. Something with the street warmth and charm of the past, that would really dress-up an area in the Depot districts. The back of the buildings could be cinder block for all I care, just give it a good street presence.

Maybe even a few stories of apt. housing on top of the call center would be a welcome goal too, I think. Why not on State or Main or West Temple in the southern sector (6th to 900 South). I would really like to see them get going with something far more urban and attractive in those areas.

Because call centers need to be cheap to build and operate. land values prevent them for the most part in urban cores. Plus, it is okay that suburban communities get jobs. It leads to a more improved suburb if situated right.

Amid gloom, construction booms in Taylorsville

http://deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,705271704,00.html

TAYLORSVILLE — Despite a national recession, Taylorsville is having its biggest quarter for new construction dollars ever.

"Despite the gloom and doom that's out there, we think we've got it pretty good," said Taylorsville economic director Keith Snarr.

From October through the end of December, officials project the city will issue building permits for $39 million in projects. Snarr credits the boom — the largest since the city incorporated in 1996 — to the growth of local business.

"We've got a good core of businesses that are doing well, and we're having a hard time finding places to put everybody," he said...

Park City - Yarrow Development Plans Likable - Planning Commissioners take a first detailed look at the proposal

http://www.parkrecord.com/city/ci_11272830

The proposed property at the site of The Yarrow would feature radically different architecture than the hotel that is there now. The designs will be critical as the Park City Planning Commission considers the idea. Courtesy of Elliott Workgroup

Plans to demolish The Yarrow and replace the hotel with a new lodging property won praise from the Park City Planning Commission recently...

...The Planning Commission was not scheduled to make decisions about the project at the recent meeting, but the comments from commissioners signal that the developer might not become entangled in a drawn-out dispute about the project...

... the proposal is an "interesting design" with a variety of heights to make the building more attractive...

Basin research park moves ahead
Project at Kimball Junction will bring hundreds of thousands of square feet of new commercial development

http://www.parkrecord.com/todaysheadlines/ci_11272846

A research park at Kimball Junction could house companies similar to Myriad Genetics and ARUP, well-known tenants at the University of Utah Research Park in Salt Lake City.

Sports-medicine firms could headquarter below ski jumps at Utah Olympic Park about seven miles from Park City. The Boyer Company will build the Kimball Junction research park on 89 acres of land south of Tanger Outlet Center, Walmart and the Sheldon Richins Building...

Dark days for dynasty built on debt -
Retail » Cottonwood Mall owner prospered until the real-estate dynasty switched business models.

http://www.sltrib.com/business/ci_11320527

Two board members of General Growth Properties Inc. marched into CEO John Bucksbaum's office to deliver a blunt message. It was time for him to resign.

An internal investigation showed that the Bucksbaum family trust had violated company policy by making private loans to two company officers and failing to inform the board. The departure of Bucksbaum -- whose father and uncle founded the giant mall owner 54 years ago -- would mark an end to the family's management control of the company...

Macy's is the lone store at the site that once was Cottonwood Mall. General Growth Properties owns that land in Holladay, demolished the mall and was supposed to redevelop it. The project is on hold for now. (File / The Salt Lake Tribune)

Macy's and the ground that was once the Cottonwood Mall Monday, September 29 2008 Rick Egan/The Salt Lake Tribune

...The stock of General Growth, which is redeveloping the demolished Cottonwood Mall in Holladay and operates five other Utah malls, has plunged more than 97 percent in the past year, dragging down the Bucksbaum family fortunes with it. The Bucksbaums' 25 percent ownership stake, worth $3.2 billion just six months ago, is now worth $116 million...

I was driving by the other day on state street and notice a new billboard of a rendering of the new 6-story WCF headquarter building that is getting built right now in Sandy.
