And city councillors twist in the wind! Changing the parking lot entrance is good, but everything else is their loss.

Apparently the 2010 games prep centre in Whalley is moving ahead: http://www.canada.com/surreynow/news...5-09190404c3f3

Unfortunately, I can't find any further information about the project. Anybody out there know where we can find pictures of this?

Why must people be so anti-development.

There's nothing wrong with Give & Take and there's a lot right with it.

Some people are afraid of change?

I do see some merit in questioning a development proposal. But I do see an issue when they decline or restrict a development that will help low income families and provide public space. It's decisions like this that really puzzle me. The Lower Mainland has a homelessness problem. creating affordable and subsidized housing would help give the homeless and nearly homeless a roof over their head. But the NIMBY's are definitely a rabid bunch....

No kidding. Kudos to the city of Vancouver for building so much public housing around the downtown - though there is arguably a need for much more. I wish that if North Vancouver residents were so concerned about their views, something could be done to restrict single-family dwelling development up the mountainsides.

i think vancouver's best skyline is still downtown and stanley park, so far the only problem is height.

I spoke to a parks representative at the SFU Presidents' Gala at SFU Surrey this evening and she said that construciton should be starting this week (today or tomorrow). There should be some pictures either on the Vanoc website or the City of Surrey website.

the strip mall across from [the 70-storey proposal] is going to be redone too - there were boards up a few months ago - i never did read them but its a site prime for towers too and the houses kitty corner are probably not going to be there much longer as they could be replaced with denser housing

already an older building near the staples was demolished this summer making way for who knows what

The signage (which hasn't changed in almost a year now) says a low-rise office building. Then again, the last time I went along there, nothing past demolition had begun. That was months ago.

ANYTHING is better than a strip mall. Nothing screams 'SUBURBIA!' quite like a strip mall. For any place that's serious about becoming a "downtown core" for a major region, strip malls are the antithesis.

are you guys refering to those red tile stores across the street from infinity?
those ugly buildings need to be torn down asap.

i wonder if the city is already regretting allowing the bestbuy to be built, that could have been a prime spot for a tower now.

Definitely. I bet in the future the Central City mall parking lot by King George will be completely redeveloped, and the through way next to the mall will become a new street. Regardless, there are still plenty of places to develop.

I dunno about that. That parking lot is usually full and there aren't that many other places to put a new lot. Although the underground lot near the West side (by the food court) is apparently multi-level though I've never seen even the first level filled up.

they could make the one level lot into a parkade if need be - that way they could add retail to the front along king george highway...

have some kind of swank walkway into the mall from KGH too

Exactly. That parkade is actually underutilized. Additionally, it has been made clear that Surrey City Hall does not want surface parking lots in the City Centre. It's just not an efficient use of space. This is the same reason why the bus loop will eventually be removed as per the transit village plan.

I kind of hope for a big underground mall that will integrate Surrey Central City and King George Station.
